NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS (YFU USA)

  AMOUNT: Varies (full and partial scholarships)
  DETAILS: YFU USA has scholarships to study abroad for high school students, including a 13th year abroad for high school graduates, in more than 38 countries, for a year, semester, or summer program. To be eligible for a YFU USA scholarship, you must meet the eligibility requirements listed in the Scholarship Information Sheets for the program to which you are applying. Generally, applicants must be between the ages of 15 and 18, maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA for a year or semester program or 2.0 GPA for a summer program, and be in good health. You will also need to complete additional paperwork, have a medical exam, submit photos, and be interviewed by a YFU USA volunteer. For most YFU countries, you don't need to know the language, although some countries do require previous language study. Students with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Many scholarships are designated for specific countries. Others allow you to list several country choices. Students may be eligible to apply for more than one scholarship program. Applicants need to complete only one application for multiple scholarships. Unless otherwise specified on the individual Scholarship Information Sheets, you and your family are responsible for passport and visa fees, excess luggage tariffs, any airport taxes, required overseas medical insurance, optional program activities, and personal spending money. In addition, certain scholarships are partial awards and do not cover the entire program tuition. In the case of a partial award, the student's family is responsible for the remaining amount of the tuition. Check the individual Scholarship Information Sheets to determine if the scholarship is partial and, if so, the amount of the award. Many of the scholarships have an application fee. Only one application fee is required, if you are applying for multiple scholarships. If you are applying to the regular program, you must submit the application with the $75 non-refundable application fee and the $500 enrollment deposit. If you are applying to the regular program and a scholarship program , you must submit the $75 non-refundable application fee, the $500 enrollment deposit, and the appropriate non-refundable scholarship application fee listed in the Scholarship Information Sheet. The Alaska Youth for Environmental Action (AYEA) , a program of the National Wildlife Federation, is sponsoring the 2008 Civics & Conservation Summit for high school students interested in politics and the environment. The four-day conference is scheduled for March 9-13 in Juneau. Students will learn: how to talk with the media, how to communicate with elected officials, how to read a bill, and how to influence decisions our government leaders make about the environment and our lives. NATIONAL SOCIETY DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION (NSDAR)

DETAILS: NASDAR awards ten different undergraduate scholarships. All applicants must be citizens of the U.S. and must attend or plan to attend an accredited college or university in the U.S. Some scholarships apply only to high school seniors while others require applicants to be enrolled in college/university programs to be eligible. Applicants must obtain a sponsorship letter from their local DAR Chapter. Local Chapter phone numbers are (day) 563-4522 and (eve.) 243-0752, and the e-mail address is adddar@alaska.net. You must also obtain the name of your current State Chairman and e-mail it to the NSDAR National Scholarship Chairman. Awards are based on academic excellence, commitment to field of study, and financial need, plus other restrictions on specific scholarships. No affiliation with DAR is necessary unless specified. The National DAR Scholarship Chairman must receive all applications by the deadline indicated for the specific scholarship. There are four categories of scholarship offerings, which are listed below. NICK BEGICH SCHOLARSHIP FUND

DETAILS: Open to Alaskan residents only. The Nick Begich Scholarship was created in 1977 by friends and family of the late Congressman Nick Begich (D-Alaska). Since its inception the Fund has provided over $200,000 in support of Alaskans interested in pursuing careers in education, government, and public service. Congressman Begich's plane disappeared on a flight from Anchorage to Juneau on October 16, 1972, while campaigning for re-election to the United States House of Representatives. The plane was never found. Scholarships will be awarded only to applicants interested in careers in education, government, and public service. A minimum of a "C" average for the previous school year is required. Applicants must submit a completed application form, a 500- word essay, an official transcript, and two recommendation letters. Applications must be mailed with all required items and postmarked by midnight February 8. Applications may also be e-mailed by midnight February 8. DETAILS: Open to seniors and continuing education applicants. Applicants must be active members of the Matanuska Electric Association (MEA) or a dependent of an active MEA member who resides in MEA's service territory. If your parents own a cabin in this area, you may be eligible for this scholarship. Check with MEA. MEA Scholarship Committee members or their dependents may not apply. Of the ten scholarships awarded, at least one scholarship will be awarded in each of the following categories: public service (e.g. education), a non-traditional student resuming his or or her education, and vocational education. Applicants may be graduating seniors from an Alaskan secondary school, or be attending or planning to attend a college or vocational school. February 18, 2008 UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA ANCHORAGE DELLA KEATS/U-DOC SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
 

AMOUNT: No charge for participation. A small stipend may be provided. Travel assistance may be available for qualifying students. Students stay in the University of Alaska Anchorage dormitory facility.

DETAILS: Open to high school juniors and seniors who are U.S. citizens, a resident of Alaska, and meet at least one of the following criteria: belong to an under-represented minority group; live in a rural area; speak English as a second language; be a first-generation American; be economically disadvantaged; or be the first in your family to go to college. The UAA Della Keats /U-DOC Summer Enrichment Program is a six-week intensive program for minority, rural, and disadvantaged students who are interested in careers in medicine and other healthcare fields. The goal of the program is to foster, affirm and encourage students' interest in the medical profession by allowing them to explore healthcare careers and to provide an introduction to college life. Students take classes to preview the pre-med curriculum; explore medical career opportunities; learn about biological, cultural and social forces that impact health and health care; explore clinical medicine with physician mentors, and learn about medical career issues in Alaska. The six-week program is from June 29 to August 8 (dates may be subject to change). Applicants must submit a completed application, a transcript, PSAT/SAT/ACT test scores, two letters of recommendations from teachers, and a current photograph. February 18 , 2008 NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH DIABETES AND DIGESTIVE AND KIDNEY DISEASES (NIDDK) SHORT-TERM EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR UNDER-REPRESENTED PERSONS (STEP-UP)
 

AMOUNT: No charge for participation. A small stipend may be provided. Travel assistance may be available for qualifying students. Students stay in the University of Alaska Anchorage dormitory facility.

DETAILS: Open to minority high school juniors and seniors. The purpose of this research program is to increase the number of ethnic minorities who are involved in biomedical research. Currently, there is a critical shortage of minorities (Hispanic/Latino, African American, Native American, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Alaska Native) working in the field of biomedical research. As a result, critical insights and perspectives are lacking in the development, implementation and evaluation of this growing and important field. Applicants must be from a minority background; have GPA's of 3.0 or better; and demonstrate interest in medicine or medical research. Students complete a biomedical research project under the mentorship of research scientists. They present their results at the NIH NIDDK Summer Research Apprentice Program's national conference in August, publish their results in an NIH publication and are given priority for related NIH programs and scholarships. During the summer research program students have the opportunity to: learn about biomedical research through active involvment in a project; learn about college life; and take courses which preview the college pre-medical curriculum. The summer research program is from June 29 to August 17, 2008. Applicants must submit a completed application, a transcript, PSAT/SAT/ACT test scores, two letters of recommendations from teachers, and a photograph. DETAILS: Open to high school seniors. The Anchorage Education Association is offering three scholarships to local high school graduates. The applicant must have a minimum overall high school GPA of 3.0, must demonstrate financial need, be a US citizen, and have serious intention to complete a degree program at an accredited college or university. Applicants must submit a folder utilizing the scholarship folder guidelines of the Anchorage School District (Portfolio). Assistance with this scholarship folder is available at the CR. A $2,500 Pearl Shockley Scholarship will be awarded to senior who is pursuing a career in communications.

February 29 , 2008  BP PRINCIPALS' AND COMMISSIONER’S SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT: Twenty-five scholarships at $4,000 each.

DETAILS: The BP Principal’s and Commissioner’s Scholarship program recognizes graduating Alaskans.  BP funding enables this statewide program to award twenty-five $4,000 scholarships, which are distributed over a four-year period ($1,000/per year).  Selections are made by the board of directors of the Alaska Association of Secondary School Principals, based on nominations received from principals from around the State. From the 25 principals' winners, one student is selected by the Commissioner of Education and Early Development to received an additional $16,000 ($4,000 per year), for a total of $20,000.  You must be nominated by your school for this award. If you want to be considered for the nomination, please submit your completed nomination form and the items on the check list to the CRC by 7:30 am Friday, February 29.
