WASHINGTON WORKSHOPS FOUNDATION'S -WASHINGTON INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

AMOUNT:  The three-week Washington Internship Experience costs $3,750, with additional week add-ons priced on a pro-rata, proportional basis. The costs includes full tuition, a staff member on campus duty at all times, breakfast and dinner each day at the Marymount University (in Arlington, Virginia) campus cafeteria, and daily transportation to and from the internship site. This also includes a non-refundable $150 application fee. Students may schedule attendance for a three-, four-, five- or six-week internship between June 15 and July 26, 2008.

  DETAILS: Open to rising juniors, seniors and recent graduates. The Washington Workshops Foundation offers the Washington Internship Experience to motivated students interested in government and politics. The primary component of this seminar is a three- to six-week internship in a Congressional office or politically related committee, council or state office on or near Capitol Hill. Students are also given the opportunity to conduct an in-depth study on legislative politics. Applicants must submit a completed enrollment application, a non-refundable application fee of $150, a typed resume, a letter of character reference, a letter of academic reference, and a one- page typed essay entitled " Why I want to be a Washington, D.C. intern." ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION 2008 Most Valuable Student Scholarship Competition

By 10:00 p.m.

AMOUNT:  500 four-year awards: two $60,000 awards; two $40,000 awards; two $20,000 awards; two $16,000 awards; two $12,000 awards; four $10,000 awards; four $8,000 awards; and 482 awards at $4,000.

DETAILS:  Any high school senior who is a US citizen is eligible to apply.  Male and female students compete separately for identical awards.  Awards rely heavily on leadership activities as well as on scholastic achievement (students should be in the upper 5% of their class) and show financial need. Most Valuable Student scholarships are for students pursuing a four-year degree on a full-time basis (minimum 12 semester hours) in a U.S. college or university. Applications must advance through local, district and state competition to reach the national competition. Applicant must use the official form, and the form must be bound. AMERICAN LEGION NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL ORATORICAL CONTEST

AMOUNT: Local: $1,500 first place; state winner at Regional level: $1,500; Regional winner but not to National Finals: $3,000; National level: first place $18,000, second place $16,000, third place $14,000.

 

DETAILS: Open to all high school students. The purpose of this contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the U.S. Constitution and to develop leadership qualilties, including the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and to prepare for the acceptance of the duties and responsibilities of American citizenship. The student prepares two speeches, one to be memorized (8-10 minutes) and one extemporaneous (3-5 minutes); both speeches must be on some phase of the U.S. Constitution and emphasizes the attendant duties, and obligations of a citizen. January 9, 2008 ALASKA ENGINEERING EDUCATION FOUNDATION (AEEF) ALASKA SOCIETY OF PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS (ASPE) SCHOLARSHIPS
Postmarked or Received By AMOUNT: One $1,000 state-wide scholarship and local regional scholarships in each of Anchorage, Juneau and Fairbanks. The number and dollar amounts of the local scholarships vary based on the amount of funds raised. At a minimum, one $500 scholarship will be awarded at each local region.

DETAILS:  Through AEEF, the Alaska Society of Professional Engineers funds a state scholarship for high school SENIORS who wish to pursue a degree in engineering.  To be eligible for an AEEF Scholarship, applicants must attend an engineering program at a university or college that is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET-EAC). Applicants must submit completed application form, three recommendation letters, a 500-word essay, offical transcript, and SAT or ACT official score sheet. By submitting this one application, applicants will be considered for the state-wide and an Anchorage regional scholarship. Information and application are available in the CRC.

In addition, the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) has national scholarships available to high school SENIORS.  You must be pursuing a degree in engineering.  You must apply directly to NSPE. Check the web site for deadlines. Contact NSPE at http://www.nspe.org/students

ALASKA'S JUNIOR MISS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

AMOUNT: $100,000 in scholarships

DETAILS: Open to senior females graduating in the spring of 2008. The competition is based on: scholastics, an interview, talent, fitness and self-expression. The contest will be held at the Ketchikan High School Auditorium in Ketchikan, Alaska. Housing and meals will be provided. The contest will be held March 18 to 22, 2008. ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION (ENF) LEGACY AWARDS

AMOUNT: One year, $1,000 scholarship

To Local Lodge in Eagle River, Alaska

DETAILS: Open to high school seniors. The ENF Legacy Award is awarded to children and grandchildren of living Elk members who joined the order on or before April 1, 2005, and have been a member in good standing since then, or a charter member of a Lodge that was instituted on or after April 1, 2005. The Elk must also be a paid-up member through March 31, 2008. The applicant must take the SAT or ACT by December 31, 2007. If the applicant's parent and grandparent are both Elks members, the applicant should apply through the parent's Elks Lodge. Students may apply for more than one ENF scholarship, but they will be awarded only one. Detailed information can be found at: http://www.elks.org.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY (NHS) SCHOLARSHIP
AMOUNT: Each state will have at least one finalist who will receive a $1,000 scholarship. From the finalists, 53 state winners will be chosen to receive an additional $500. Nine regional winners will be selected from the 53 state winners who will receive an additonal $1,500. From the regional winners, one national winner will be chosen to receive an additional $10,000 making his or her total scholarship award $13,000.
  DETAILS: Only high school seniors who are members in good standing of NHS are eligible for nomination. Applications are available in the CRC (C225). There is a $6.00 processing fee. Nomination applications are due to the CRC by January 14, 2008, for review by the SAHS National Honor Society nomination committee.

DETAILS:  The Greater Seattle Business Association and the Pride Foundation have awarded more than $1.8 million in scholarships to over 650 recipients since 1991. Scholarships are available for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and straight ally (straight and supportive of LGBT issues) students of all ages, as well as students from LGBT families. There are forty (40) different types of scholarships. Students need to complete only one (1) application to apply. Applicants must be residents of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, or Montana. DETAILS: Open to seniors planning to attend an institution of higher learning, academic or trade school.   Sons and daughters of  ConocoPhillips Alaska employees are not eligible, but all other high school seniors may apply.  Applicants are selected based on: student's future potential to contribute their knowledge and talents in Alaska, demonstrated service to the community and school, and academic achievement. January 15, 2008   NATIONAL SOCIETY DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION (DAR)-DAR GOOD CITIZENS PROGRAM AND SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY CONTEST
  AMOUNT:  Good Citizen award recipient receives a pin, certificate and wallet recognition card. Scholarship Essay Contest: State essay contest winner receives $250; National essay contest first place winner receives $3,000, second place winner receives $1,000, and third place winner receives $750.

DETAILS: Open to seniors. For both the Good Citizen Program and the essay contest, applicants must be nominated and have demonstrated outstanding citizenship.

Good Citizen Program: Nominee must demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities listed in the application.

Essay Contest: There are two parts to the essay contest. Part I consists of the student describing how he/she has tried to manifest the qualities of a good citizen. Part II consists of a two hour proctored essay. The winning entry is advanced through State and National levels.

DETAILS:  Open to seniors, provided neither you nor your parents/legal guardian are employed with the Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. or plan to be by April 25, 2008. Students must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.; must have graduated from high school, home school or earned a GED certificate between August 1, 2007 and July 31, 2008; and have a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0. DETAILS:  Open to juniors. The Discover Scholarship Program seeks to honor the exemplary achievements of high school juniors in all aspects of their lives. Any high school junior as of September 2007 is eligible to apply if he or she meets these qualifications: is enrolled in and will be graduating from an accredited U.S. high school; has a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 or above on a 4.0 scale for the previous two (2) academic years (9th and 10th grade); and plans to continue his or her education or training beyond high school in any U.S. accredited training, licensing or certification program or institution of higher education. The judges are looking for juniors who have diverse and outstanding accomplishments and have faced a significant obstacle(s) or challenge(s).   AMOUNT: Up to $10,000 per academic year for four years

DETAILS: Open to seniors who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirt by owning and operating their own businesses while in high school. The Foundation's vision is to build a large network of young business owners from across the country and connect them with each other for the purpose of sharing their experiences in running their own businesses. Applicants are selected based solely on demonstration of entrepreneurial spirit. To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must graduate from high school in 2008; attend a 4-year college or university, private or public, within the 50 states; own and operate a genuine business (non-profits are eligible); have at least one employee, even if only part time; and complete the application online by January 15, 2008.
