The American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society, is offering scholarships to underrepresented minority students who are U.S. citizens. The ACS Scholars Program provides financial support to academically accomplished African American, Hispanic, or American Indian students in their pursuit of undergraduate studies in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, environmental science and related disciplines. The following information is the criteria for high school seniors. DETAILS: Applicant must be a high school junior and a member of a Ladies Auxiliary VFW Junior Girls Unit to apply.  The Ladies Auxiliary VFW offers two scholarships for outstanding junior girls aged 13 through 16.  A $10,000 and a $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to girls who excel scholastically, are actively involved in Junior Girls Units, and are leaders at their schools. US AIR FORCE ACADEMY SUMMER SEMINAR

 

DETAILS: Open to second semester sophomores and first semester juniors in high school. If you have considered the U.S. Air Force Academy as your college of choice and you are a junior going into your senior year, the Academy offers two one-week sessions: June 8-13 and June 15-20. The purpose of the summer sessions is to provide students an opportunity to experience the academic environment, physical requirements, team building, and leadership skills necessary to become an Air Force Academy cadet. DETAILS: Open to high school juniors (age 16-17 on the date of the appointment). The page program offers young Alaskans the opportunity to attend classes in the Nation's Capital with students from all across the country. This affords them a chance to experience new ideas, perspectives, and issues. While performing their Senate duties, Pages meet some of the Nation's most prominent leaders and witness firsthand the political debates of the U.S. Senate.

Pages play an important role in the day-to-date operation of the Senate. Pages must have tremendous endurance (pages can have long and tedious hours), a mature attitude, and a superior academic discipline. Pages are political appointments and serve their respective caucuses. Thus, applicants must be philosophically comfortable working with Republicans. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 and be in good health with current immunizations. Applicants must submit a completed application, a transcript, two reference letters, and a cover letter explaining why you are applying, as well as other qualifications/achievements that should be considered during the selection process. March 17, 2008 DAVID WARREN CUDDY SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

DETAILS: Open to graduating high school senior. This scholarship was established to honor the memory of David Cuddy. Mr. Cuddy, a graduate of the original Anchorage High School in the 1930's. He was a leader, athlete and avid outdoorsman. In high school he was student body and class president, editor of the yearbook, a member of the Honor Society, and lettered in sports every year. He went on to study law at Stanford University before volunteering for the army during World War II. He was a member of an elite special unit known as the "Devil's Brigade," the precursor to the Green Beret. Lt. Cuddy defended the U.S. at Attu and Kiska Islands on the Aleutian chan. He later served in Italy where he was killed in a mine blast in 1944. Each year the scholarship award is given to a senior who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and student leadership. Applicants must demonstrate their leadership skills through their role in student government, as a yearbook editor, an athlete, or in some other school-wide capacity. Applicants must graduate with their class and plan to attend a four-year college or university. The winner will be selected based on their of application and recommendation letters. The Anchorage School District Superintendent will make the final selection. Applicants must submit a letter (no longer than three (3) pages) of application detailing their achievement and evidence of leadership; and attach two recommendation letters. AMOUNT: Individual scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $10,000.
  DETAILS: The Gillam Foundation Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors who will be attending a four-year university as a full-time student to pursue course work in global commerce fields such as business administration, economics, accounting, finance, marketing, communications, human resources, computer science, mathematics, securities trading, and portfolio management or another technical area. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.75, and while scholastic achievement is considered in the selection process, it is not the only criteria. Up to $250,000 will be awarded in 2008, with individual scholarship awards ranging from $5,000 to $10,000. Final award amounts will be based on the individual application and scores received on each section of the application. March 1, 2008 ANCHORAGE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA-MARY & LUCIAN CASSETTA MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

  DETAILS: Open to seniors. The Anchorage Symphony Orchestra invites music students to participate in the Mary and Lucian Cassetta Scholarship competition. This year's competition will be held on Tuesday, April 8, beginning in late afternoon at the Sydney Laurence Theatre of the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. The competition is open to high school seniors who display talent, dedication to music and a serious commitment to an advanced study program in a recognized music school or music camp. Competition is open to both instrumentalists and vocalists. Applicants must submit a completed application and a recommendation letter from the applicant's music instructor on the degree of the student's commitment; the recommendation must be submitted separately to the scholarship committee. DETAILS: The Junior Statemen Summer School program offers a challenging, dynamic academic experience for students who have a passion for politics and government. This summer 1300 outstanding students will gather on four campuses to immerse themselves in politics, history and debate. For over 68 years this program has prepared outstanding students for leadership. Any outstanding high school student may apply for admission. U.S. citizenship is not required for admission. Excellent command of the English language, both written and oral, is necessary. Five days prior to her high school graduation, Ashley and two friends were killed by a drunk driver. Since her death, her family and friends have been very active in educating the public about the dangers of drunk driving. DETAILS: The EOSO will be awarding several $1,000 scholarships.  Applicants must be a graduating high school seniors, the son or daughter of an active duty or retired active duty military member, and live in the Anchorage area.  This includes students whose parents are divorced.  If the parent with whom he/she lives has married a military member who has not legally adopted the student, yet provides support and has a military ID card, this student is also eligible.  Rank is not considered.  Selection of recipients is based upon scholarship, leadership and citizenship.  Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA.  Allow enough mailing time for the application to reach the EOSO by the deadline. DETAILS: RAHI is a summer pre-college enrichment program for Alaska Native high school juniors and seniors who either (1) reside and attend school in rural communities, or 2) reside in urban areas and have strong ties to their rural communities. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Successful applicants will have an opportunity to have a first hand college experience including college classes and campus life. Students will be given shopping tips, provided information about living in a new environment, and be able to earn 9 to 11 Univerisity of Alaska Fairbanks college credits. AMOUNT: The cost to attend the Summer Seminar is about $300, which pays for your room and board as well a variety of materials. Students must arrange and pay for their transportation.
  DETAILS: Open to juniors. The U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar offers the opportunity for high school students to visit the Naval Academy for one week during the summer. Summer Seminar dates are: May 31 to June 5; June 7 to 12; and June 14 to 19 . Students will experience all aspects of the Naval Academy including the academic program, physical training, and midshipman life. Midshipmen lead the Summer Seminar in conjunction with active duty Navy and Marine Corps officers. More than 1,800 students from around the world attend this past-paced program each year.   DETAILS: Open to a graduating high school senior or currently enrolled full-time college student. The FRSC scholarship program provides financial assistance to deserving applicants to further their education at an accredited undergraduate institution. Scholarship awards are based on academic achievement, reference letters, personal activities and achievements, community service, and an essay. To be eligible appplicants must meet one of the following: (A) Be a son or daughter of a family member possessing a valid military identification card (DD1173). (Specific requirements are detailed in the application instruction); or (B) Be the son or daughter of a Department of the Army or Department of Defense civilian employed at Fort Richardson. Applicants are not eligible to receive a scholarship if any of the following apply: (1) Accepting a military academy appointment; (2) Accepting a ROTC scholarship; (3) Accepting a one, two, three, or four-year full scholarship (i.e. full tuition, room and board); (4) Accepting a partial scholarship that when combined with FRSC scholarship would exceed a full scholarship at the institution to which they enroll.
