VFW VOICE OF DEMOCRACY COMPETITION |

AMOUNT: $3 million in college scholarships |

DETAILS: Open to students in grades 9 to 12. State winners are invited to a week in Washington, D.C. The Voice of Democracy competition provides high school students the opportunity to write and record a broadcast script on a patriotic theme, competing for $3 million in college scholarships. Students can enter by submitting the required form, along with their essay and recording to their local VFW post. Entry forms and instructions are available at the VFW national web site at www.vfw.org. Application and recording are due no later than November 1, 2007. |

SEATTLE UNIVERSITY SULLIVAN LEADERSHIP AWARD COMPETITION |
| On or Before | AMOUNT: 4-year full scholarship DETAILS: Students are selected on the basis of demonstrated service, leadership and academic achievement to receive full tuition, room and meals for each of four years of undergraduate study at Seattle University (SU). Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents from Alaska, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, or Washington. The Sullivan Leadership Award application, along with the Common Application and the Seattle University Undergraduate Supplemental Application, must be completed and postmarked on or before November 15, 2007. Candidates admitted to SU will be required to attend the Sullivan Leadership Day competition on Saturday, January 12, 2008. | DETAILS: By nomination only; sophomores only. One student is selected to be a HOBY Ambassador at HOBY’s expense-paid Leadership Seminar sometime in May or June 2008. Students are introduced to distinguished leaders of the community such as business, technology, education, government, arts and sciences. Through panel discussions, students are able to gain a perspective of the nation, its people, and their role within the world community. Nominations by South Anchorage High Staff are due to the CRC by November 15, 2007, at 8:00 am for review by the SAHS nomination committee. Detailed information is available in the CRC. |

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SECONDARY PRINCIPAL'S LEADERSHIP AWARD (PLA) |
| To CRC By 8:00 a.m | AMOUNT: Award levels for this year are: 100 $1,000 state awards, and eight additional $500 regional awards, and one additional $3,500 semifinalist award (total $5,000), or one additional $7,000 finalist award (total $8,500), or one additional $10,500 national winner award (total $12,000). DETAILS: By nomination only; seniors only. Applicants must be in the top 20% of their class and demonstate strong leadership qualities. Nominations are not based on financial need. Nominations are due to the SAHS CRC (C-225) by November 21, 2007, at 8:00 a.m. for review by the SAHS nomination committee which will select one applicant. The nominee's application will be mailed by December 7, 2007. Winners of the award must attend a U.S. college or university. A $6.00 processing fee must accompany the application.
