Zangle - What parents see and the On/Off switch

Zangle is live and parents can now view their students' information. (as soon as they receive their passwords). This is an excellent communication device, but teachers should realize what is being posted and what controls they have.

If shared, parents see:

Attendance
Assignments
Posted Marks
Classroom News

and also a number of other reports not controlled by teachers.
Contact information, course schedule, etc.

Attendance

The attendance gives a list of everything that has happened. Teachers do not control this, other than by submitting attendance.

Assignments

This is almost exactly what you see when you go to Student Profile / Assignments in the teacher's Zangle connection. A previous posting showed how to access that and what you see. Share Assignment Information You can check your own assignments by looking in the Student Profile.

Note is this fragment: When I first looked, the Period 3 grade showed as an 'F' with only one assignment showing. The assignment was not graded. I checked with the teacher to confirm the gradebook and by the time that I went to take the screenshot, the assignment was changed to 'not graded' so it does not show up.

Turn off Share Assignment Information (Gradebook Setup)

If you turn off Share Assignment Information (in Gradebook Setup), the period does not show up at all. (details at bottom of these steps.) Note that Period 3 is missing from this display. Also note that this report shows fewer assignments than the previous one. Just like the teachers, parents can show either the current week's assignments or ALL.

fyi: under the upper right blue mark is a quick link to the teacher's e-mail. They can click on the link and send you a message. (I think you will have a similar link, too, when all the data are entered.)

Description, Short Description, and Details

When you set up your assignment, there are three things to fill in to describe it:
1) Description - what shows up for parents in the list of assignments
2) Short Description - what shows at the top of your spreadsheet view
3) Details - what shows in a pop-up when the parent clicks on the icon next to the assignment. Note the one above that shown does not have details entered.

Print Progress Report

Note in the previous step, the parents have a link to Print Progress Report. This is similar to what you see in the Zangle Report section, but there are no options to select in creating them. It looks like it has the key points. Note that it shows a separate grade for Homework, Quizzes/Tests and Classwork. (The categories) It shows missing scores, etc. broken out.

You should be able to see the equivalent in Zangle Reports / Gradebook / Student Progress Report.

Marks - progress reports and quarter grades

Marks are the 'formal' grades. They did not show up earlier this week, but they are 'live' now. Evidently when you click submit, they show up (unless you don't share). I don't know the details of this. I assume that this is controlled on the Gradebook Setup (see bottom of this page)

News (classroom and schoolwide)

Posted information about this will be at some other time and place. But it looks handy and is live! Some are using it.

The On / Off Switches

Attendance - the teacher does not control whether this is displayed or not.
Under Gradebook Setup / Class Options:
Assignments - Select Share or Do Not Share Assignment Information. This can be done separately for each class, some classes might be ready to share, others not...
Individual Assignments - remember you can 'Hide' individual assignments when you set them up.
Progress Report - same as Assignments
Marks (submitted grades) - Display or Do Not Display Calculated Gradebook Mark. I'm assuming this is correct, but cannot test it. I'm also assuming that Zangle will show the mark submitted this week, even though it says Semester 1.

It's cool...

I'm impressed with Zangle! This is a very powerful tool - it has been stressful for many to get it started and it is causing many of us to do things differently. But the end result will be much better communication between everyone involved in educated our students. It is worth the effort!

Thanks to the ASD Zangle staff involved in setting this up and getting so much in place so fast!
And thanks to everyone for their patience with the inevitable confusions and frustrations.
