School Laptop '5-packs'

SAHS has two '5-packs'; sets of 5 laptop Macintosh computers with a printer that are on carts. They can be checked out for short-term use in classrooms by contacting the library.

All of the computers are set up to use wireless and are nominally 'bound' to the network. This means that students and staff should be able to log in with their district accounts and access their folders in the normal way. This does not always work.

Suggested Protocols:

Logging in: Turn on the computer and attempt to log in with the normal procedure. If that does not work, log in with the following local account: (This is public knowledge and may be told to students.)

This should allow the user to log in to the computer, regardless of whether it can connect to the school's network or to the greater internet. Once logged in, the user may attempt to connect to the internet with Safari or Firefox. The user may also attempt to connect to their personal folders on the server and the shared folders by clicking on either of the shortcuts on the desktop. If the shortcuts are erased, they can also connect by going to the Go menu and selecting Connect to Server. When connecting, the user will be asked for their district ID and password.

Security: Anyone can log in with this local ID and save documents (and erase them) from this account. NOTHING should be expected to be there or to be private when the student returns to that computer. EVERYTHING wanted for another time must be saved in the students' folders or on a flash drive. If you think that a student might leave something inappropriate on the computer, please monitor the students' use. If you have concerns, you might also keep track of which student uses which computer when. We can check date/time stamps and likely determine when things have been done. You should instruct students that if they see something inappropriate on the computer, they should report it immediately rather than waiting until the end of the period.

Printing: The computers are supposed to be directed to the printer that comes with the 5-pack. The printer will need to be plugged into a 'hot' port in the wall. Not all ports are hot - usually the lower two of the four are, but you can check with your tech person to find out.

Can't connect to the internet: If users cannot connect to the internet while logged into the locallaptop account, it is most likely because the wireless connection has failed. You can try logging out and restarting the computer, but you may need to connect with a cable to a port in the wall.

Problems or concerns: see your local tech person.
