Citing Graphics and Other Media Sources

 

Just as text taken from another source must have correct citation information, so too, must any graphics or sound included in your final product.  Below are some of the common types of media used in presentations and the citation in Modern Language Association (MLA) format.  The second citation listed for each category is the electronic version. (NOTE: You will need to format citations with hanging indents and double-spacing.)

 

  Photograph, Painting or Sculpture

 

Artist’s name first, title (underlined), name of institution that houses the work, (e.g. museum), or, for a work in a private collection, the individual who owns it, and follow the name by a comma and the city.

 Map, Chart, Graph

 

In general, treat a map or chart like an anonymous book, but add the appropriate descriptive label (Map, Chart, Graph).

  Cartoon or Comic Strip

 

Artist’s name, title of the cartoon or comic strip in quotation marks, the descriptive label (Cartoon or Comic Strip), neither underlined nor enclosed in quotation marks.  Conclude with name of source (underlined), location (in brackets) date (followed by colon), and page number.

 Film or Video Recording

 

Title, underlined, and includes the director, distributor, and the year of release.  You may include other data that seem pertinent – such as the names of the writer, performers, and producer – between the title and the distributor.

 Sound Recording or Sound Clip

 

Composer, conductor, or performer, title (underlined), the artist(s) the manufacturer (comma), and year of issue.

Author’s name (or editor, compiler – followed by the appropriate abbreviation), title of the work (underlined) name of editor, compiler, or translator of the book, publication information, electronic publication information, date of access and complete URL.
