11/02/09 PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS: If you've made a difference by volunteering in your community over the past year, you could win $1,000 and a fabulous trip to Washington, D.C., next May. This program, created in 1995 by Prudential in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) to honor middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at the local, state and nationals level, begins in September. Students are encouraged to complete an online application (access key: spirit). Once the form has been completed online, it must be printed out, signed and submitted to Ms. Young in C225 by November 2nd. One student will be selected as the South High School Local Honoree and two "runners-up" will be announced. From these winners, an independent judging organization names the top middle level and high school volunteer in each state and Washington, D.C. Results are announced in early February. Then, 10 National Honorees are chosen by a panel of prominent public figures, and announced at a special ceremony in Washington, D.C., in May. You can learn more about the program at www.prudential.com/spirit.
SERVICE DOGS OF ALASKA, INC . would like to invite high school students to join our S.T.E.P. Program. This program involves fostering service, companion, and therapy dogs in-training for a period of a year or less. The program includes hands-on learning about dog care, training, and canine good citizenship; the program also allows students to learn more about disabilities while working with the disabled community.
Service Dogs of Alaska, Inc. is an Alaskan organization that trains dogs for use by individuals who experience a disability. Our S.T.E.P. program participants would work with our Support Trainers on socialization and basic skills. Students would foster the dog in their home, and be responsible for daily care, training, other needs of the dog. Service Dogs of Alaska would provide the support and medical care for the dog; students and their families would be responsible for day-to-day expenses such as food, treats, and toys.
To be considered for the program students must provide a short essay about themselves, their home, why they want to participate, and what they know about the role of service dogs in the community. Please include any prior dog experience and contact information. A letter of support from a parent and one teacher/counselor must be included with your application essay.
