SUMMER WALK & WRITE 2009 : An exciting (FREE) outdoor youth program for Alaska Native and American Indian students of the Anchorage School District (Middle and High School Students). Lunch is provided; rafting trip at the end of the program; fieldtrips daily; learn about local plants, animals, ecosystems, etc. When: July 20-24 for Middle School Students; July 27-31 for High School Students; Monday-Friday (10a-4p). GEEK SQUAD SUMMER ACADEMY: Geek Squad Academy is a program designed to inspire young women to get involved first hand with technology. There will be two sessions held this summer at KCC. The first session is May 26-28 and the second is June 16-18th from 9a-3p. There is no cost to attend and lunch will be provided. The Academy is for females entering 9th-12th grade. ALASKA YOUTH EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS EXPLORER CONFERENCE: Sponsored by the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management - Hosted by the Fairbanks Police Explorers and Volunteers in Policing. The 2009 Alaska Youth Emergency Preparedness Explorer Conference will provide Police, Fire and Medical Explorers and their Advisors an opportunity to participate in disaster preparedness training as well as leadership training and specialized training in their field of interest. Explorers will return to their communities after the conference and create a service project, activity or event to teach others in their community about disaster preparedness and safety. June 14-June 22, 2009. This will be a live-in conference. The Conference will be held on Fort Waiinwright and some activities will be held in Fairbanks. CAMP INTENET EXTREME: For grades 3-10. Offers students access to top-of-the-line 20" flat screen computers, a wide variety of cutting edge multimedia equipment, and two certified teachers wtih 28 years of combined teaching experience. Campers will have an opportunity to sue these resources to produce content for a DVD, produce virtual reality environments, design and manipulate digital video, create 3-D images, create animation, design their own animated creature, create studio quality music, and gain life-long technical skills that can be used in the home and classroom. Camp internet meets in the Kasuun Elementary School technology lab. Enrollment is accepted on a first-come, first-serv basis. Cost per session is $175. Session I: June 1-5, 9a-12p. U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES PAGE PROGRAM: Pages are young people who are hired to serve as support staff for the U.S. House of Representatives. They are students in their junior year of high school, who come to Washington D.C. to live, work and study as Pages. The program includes the House Page Residence Hall, the House Page School, and work responsibilities within the House. Students must meet the following requirements: 3.0 GPA, High School Junior, Must be 16 years old by the beginning of the Page term, Eligibility foir participation in the summer program includes students who have just completed their high school sophomore or junior year. All Pages must be sponsored by a Member of Congress, so the first step is to ask a Member of Congress for sponsorship. UAF ALASKA SUMMER RESEARCH ACADEMY: The Alaska Summer Research Academy (ASRA) is a fun academic experience for students entering 8th through 12th grades. Students choose one module to study. ASRA is designed for students who are curious about the world and passionate about learning. Students learn by doing, without the boredom of lecture and the stress of homework, tests or grades.
