NOTE: A few "college specific" scholarships are listed below - you should always check with the schools you are applying to in order to find out what types of scholarships they offer and what their individual deadlines may be.

9/16/2009 CORNELL UNIVERSITY Engineering Fall Diversity Hosting Weekend: This three-day hosting event offers under-represented minority high school seniors a first hand view of Cornell University's College of Engineering, providing insight on academic, social and post-Cornell career opportunities. Students who are considering attending the visitation program should have: a rigorous high school curriculum with strong academic performance, particularly in math and science; a sincere interest in learning about the College of Engineering at Cornell University. To be considered for the Fall Diversity Hosting Weekend, the Cornell Engineering Admissions Office must receive the following items by September 16: a completed online application, including the essay question and a copy of your high school transcript. 09/29/09 FOUR VALLEYS SCHOLAR/ATHLETE AWARD: For students attending South High who reside in the communities of Bird Creek, Indian, girdwood or Portage. This joint program between Four Valleys Communityi School and Alyeska Resort, to award either a season pass for one high school aged student, and/or money to go towards the purchase of Nordic equipment. Applications available in the Career Resource Center (C225) or at the Four Valleys Community School.

10/22/09 POETRY OUT LOUD Recitation Contest: Poetry Out Loud encourages high school students to learn great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. Starting in December schools and students participate in classroom, school, and regional contests. Finalists advance to a state competition in Juneau on tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010. The state champion will then travel to the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington DC on April 25-27, 2010. The National winner receives a $20,000 college scholarship. 11/02/09 PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS: If you've made a difference by volunteering in your community over the past year, you could win $1,000 and a fabulous trip to Washington, D.C., next May. This program, created in 1995 by Prudential in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) to honor middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at the local, state and nationals level, begins in September. Students are encouraged to complete an online application (access key: spirit). Once the form has been completed online, it must be printed out, signed and submitted to Ms. Young in C225 by November 2nd. One student will be selected as the South High School Local Honoree and two "runners-up" will be announced. From these winners, an independent judging organization names the top middle level and high school volunteer in each state and Washington, D.C. Results are announced in early February. Then, 10 National Honorees are chosen by a panel of prominent public figures, and announced at a special ceremony in Washington, D.C., in May. 11/06/09 HUGH O'BRIAN YOUTH (HOBY) LEADERSHIP SEMINAR: Each year HOBY invites a sophomore student representative from each school to attend their 3-4 day leadership seminars that take place in the Spring. If you would like to be considered please submit a 300 word essay on "the challenges of being a leader in our school and community" to Ms. Young in the Career Resource Center (C225) by November 6, 2009. Two sophomores will be selected to represent South at this years HOBY seminar.

11/06/09 FOUNDATION FOR INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS IN EDUCATION (FIRE) ESSAY CONTEST: $5,000 college scholarship to one first place winner, $2,500 scholarships to two 2nd place winners and $1,000 scholarship to five runners-up. FIRE is looking for high school seniors to submit well-written essays on freedome of speech on college campuses. Essays should explain how college administrators betray liberty and violate students' constitutional rights at American colleges and universities as documented by FIRE in two short documentaries: 1) FIRE in Action: Valdosta State University and 2) Think What We Think...Or Else: Thought Control on the American Campus. Essays should be 700-1200 words. To enter, read the instructions and fill out the form posted on www.thefire.org/contests.

11/09/09 ACLU YOUTH ACTIVIST SCHOLARSHIP: The ACLU will be slecting 15 high school seniors to receive a scholarship in the amount of $7,000 each, to be issued at the start of their freshman year in college. In addition to the monetary award, the 2010 American Civil Liberties Unior Youth Activits Scholarship winners will have the opportunity to attend the Youth Activist Institute training program at the ACLU National office in New York City, where they will learn the tools and skills to continue their civil liberties work on their campuses and in their communities. In addition to demonstrating a strong commitment to civil liberties, each scholarship applicant must be a high school senior planning on entering an accrdited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking student, and have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the time of graduation. Demonstrated financial need will also increase the student's chances of qualifying for the scholarship. To be considered the ACLU of Alaska must nominate the student and sumit her/his application to the ACLU's national office. 11/13/2009 (Extended deadline) BP PROCESS TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP: The Process Tech degree leads to many good jobs: operators in the oil & gas processes, power generation, water/waste water utilities and even seafood processing plants. For student with good math and science skills, a desire to have a hands-on job, these areas make great careers. The scholarships offer up to $3,000 per semester for four semesters. 11/15/2009 SEATTLE UNIVERSITY Sullivan Leadership Award: Nine Sullivan Leadership Awards are given each year; 36 finalists receive other Seattle University scholarships ranging from $11,000 to $18,500 per year. Sullivan Leaders participate and demonstrate leadership in school activities, public service and community involvement; show commitment to justice and the good of others through service, have effective oral and written communication skills, have demanding course selection and strong academic achievement and are US citizens. Award applications, along with a complete admissions application, must be completed and transmitted or postmarked on or before November 15, 2009. Candidates for the award are required to attend the Sullivan Leaders' Day competition on Saturday, January 16, 2010 on the Seattle University campus. 11/17/09 WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP AUDITIONS: Willamette University awards over $300,000 in scholarships to music majors and non-majors annually. For music scholarship audition information, go to www.willamette.edu/cla/music.

11/30/09 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL RUDY AWARDS: The winner will receive a $10,000 academic college scholarship to the college of their choice. The two runners-up will each receive $5,000 academic scholarships. The award honors student-athletes who demonstrate exemplary character, courage, contribution and commitment as members of their high school football team. Rudy Ruettiger whose own story became the subject of hte film, RUDY starring Sean Astin and Jon Favreau, will present each finalist with a trophy and an academic scholarship. Anyone can nominate a football player they believe to be a "Rudy." Nominations are currently being accepted at www.HighSchoolRudyAwards.com.

12/01/09 BBB 2010 STUDENTS OF INTEGRITY SCHOLARSHIP: Alaska High School students are eligible for a $1,000 scholarship. The scholarships are designed to support students who recognize the importance of ethical and responsible marketplace practices. 12/15/09 AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP: Are you active in your community? Have you led a project that benefits others? Have you overcome personal challenges? You may qualify for an AXA Achievement Scholarship of $10,000 or $25,000. Learn more and download an application at: www.axa-achievement.com.

01/10/10 AACA FORREST JONES SCHOLARSHIP: $3,000 scholarship awarded early each Spring. Applicants must be enrolled in, or applyting to, one of the following (in an aviation field), or a high school senior applying to: An accredited College or University, a licensed Flight School, or a Certified A&P Program. To be considered applicant must submit a completed an signed application form, 500 word personal essay, three letters of recommendation, SAT or ACT scores, official transcripts from high school or university/college, itemizing class information and a GPA of 2.0 or higher, flight training progress report from institution or operator of a flight training program (if applicable). 01/11/10 GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARS AWARD: The Gates Millennium Scholars, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is the premiere full ride scholarship for low income students of color. (GPA of 3.3 or higher). Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they: are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American; are a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the United States; have attained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3 on an unweighted 4.0 scale or have earned a GED; will be enrolling for the first time at a U.S. accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking, first-year student in the fall 2010; have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities; meed the federal pell grant eligibility criteria; have completed and submitted all three required forms by the deadline. 01/29/10 SAM WALTON COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 scholarships, non-renewable. Open to high school senior graduating between August 1, 2009 and July 31, 2010. Must have a cumulative high school grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4-point scale, and have taken either the ACT or SAT test. Must plan to enroll for fall 2010 as a freshman at a two year or four year college or university that is located in the U.S. and is accredited and listed on the official website of the U.S. Department of Education. Must have financial need and be able to demonstrate the need with required documents. Go to www.walmartfoundation.org for application and process.

01/30/10 ACT NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL POSTER CONTEST: Students can enter the contest by designing a poster that encourages other students to attend college and to take the ACT as their college entrance exam. The winning design concept will be used to produce the 2010-2011 ACT test date information poster distributed to high schools nationwide. The first place winner will receive a $5,000 nonrenewable scholarship to her or her college of choice. Second and third place winners will receive $2,500 and $1,000 scholarships respectively. The official entry form and poster must be postmarked on or between October 19, 2009, and January 30, 2010. 01/31/10 SIMON YOUTH FOUNDATION COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: Up to 181 mall awards of up to $1,400 each will be granted. High school seniors attending school and living in close proximity of a Simon Property Mall or Community/Lifestyle Center. Planning to enroll no later than fall 2010 in a full-time* undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school. Employees or family members of employees of Simon Property Group and affiliated partners are not eligible for this program. www.syf.org.

02/01/10 BURGER KING SCHOLARS PROGRAM: Burger King Scholars awards are $1,000 each and may be used for educational expenses, such as tuition fees and books, during the first year of college or post-secondary vocational/technical school. Students must be a high school senior and a resident of the U.S., Canada or Puerto Rico, maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher, work part-time for a minimum of 10-40 hours/week, be actively involved in community service activities, demonstrate financial need (1040 form required) and plan to enroll in an accredited two/or four-year college, university of vocational/technical school by Fall of the application year. 02/10/10 KFC COLONEL'S SCHOLARS PROGRAM: KFC Colonel's Scholars is looking for high school seniors with financial need and an entrepreneurial spirit to qualify for the KFC Colonel's Scholars Program. awards are up to $20,000 for tuition, fees, textbooks, room and board. To qualify, graduating high school seniors must: earn a minimum high school cumulative GPA of 2.75; enroll in a public college or university within their state of legal residence; Plan to pursue a bachelor's degree; be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; demonstrate financial need. 02/12/10 NICK BEGICH SCHOLARSHIP INTERN FUND: One $2,000 Eugene A. Kennedy scholarship will be awarded to the highest-scoring applicant and may be renewed up to four years. Three $1,500 scholarships will also be awarded. Any Alaska resident pursuing a degree in education, government, or public service is eligible to apply. The fund will also consider appointing at least one six-month funded intern/fellowship (funding levels vary but are approximately $12,500.) The appointments are available to Alaska residents over the age os 21 who are seeking to experience direct service in the aforementioned fields. 02/15/10 UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS: The University of Alaska Foundation announces the availability of scholarships to students attending any campus of Alaska during the 2010-11 academic year. The UA Foundation has over 500 scholarships offering awards from $500 to $8000. Requirements vary. Online submission of the schoarship application is preferred as there may be a delay if the application is not submitted electronically. Since most schoarships are awarded early in the spring of each academic year, applications must be received by Feb. 15, 2010 to be considered for most fall 2010-spring 2011 scholarships. 02/15/10 DR. SEUSS'S OH, THE PLACES YOU'LL GO! 2010 COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: Applicants must be 12th grade high school students. 1st place $5,000 - one scholarship awarded. 02/15/10 SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY: SOU offers a variety of scholarship to new and returning students including the Western Undergraduate Exchange scholarship. For more information on SOU scholarship go to www.sou.edu/admissions.

02/15/10 THE NATIONAL CO-OP SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: To be eligible for a merit co-op scholarship a student must apply, be accepted, and attend one of the 8 NCCE Partner Colleges and Universities listed: Drexel University, Johnson & Wales University, Kettering University, Pace University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Cincinnati, University of Toledo or Wentworth Institute of Technology. The National Commission will award 170 renewable merit co-op scholarship of $6,000 each. To qualify students must: have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale, complete all the required admissions applications material and be accepted for the 2010-2011 academic year at one of the National Commission Partner Institutions listed, complete the application including a typed one-page essay (500 words) describing why you have chosen to pusue a college cooperative education program. The National Commission encourages minority and female students as well as students interested in science, mathematics, engineering and technology (SMET) to apply for this merit co-op scholarship.

02/20/10 MISS ALASKA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: Note: All Contestants should attend an information meeting on either December 2, 2009 or December 16, 2009. Contact Elizabeth Lochner at missforgetmenot@gmail.com for more information on the meetings or the scholarship. The following titles will be crowned: Miss Forget Me NOt, and Miss Forget Me Not OUtstanding Teen. Winners of the Miss Forget Me Not Scholarship Program are qualified to compete in the Miss Alaska Scholarship Foundation Pageant in June where they will have the opportunity to win more scholarship. A list of guidelines may also be picked up from the Career Resource Center, C225.

04/23/10 JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF ALASKA, INC./UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA, ANCHORAGE COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP: Eligibility: High school senior who participated in a Junior Achievement program during middle school and/or high school. Program participation must have included at least one of the following: JA Company program JA Economics, TITAN, JA Success Skills, Personal Finance, International Marketplace, Globe, Enterprise in Action, Personal Economics, Economics of Staying in School, JA Economics for Success or the Global Marketplace. Desired degree focus in Business, International or Foreign Trade, Economics, Business Development or Business Administration. GPA 2.8 or above. Letters of recommendation by JA teacher and/or JA volunteer, official copy of high school transcript, written essay required. See Ms. Young in C225 for more details on application guidelines.

The American Indian College Fund: The American Indian College Fund provides scholarship support to each tribal college. We also administer several scholarship programs offered to American Indian students attending tribal colleges and state and private universities. The SallieMae Fund Scholarships: Go to http://www.thesalliemaefund.org/smfnew/sections/apply.html to learn more about The First in My Family Scholarship Program for Hispanci-American students who are the first in their family to attend college and have financial need, or The Unmet Need Scholarship open to families with a combined income of $30,000 or less.

United Negro College Fund : Go to http://www.uncf.org/forstudents/scholarship.asp for a list of scholarships offered through UNCF.

American Indian Graduate Center: The oldest and largest National provider of Graduate Scholarships for American Indian and Alaska Native Students. Each year, the AIGC and AIGCS programs provide over $8,000,000 in financial aid to over 1,000 American Indian and Alaska Native undergraduate and graduate students. Visit www.aigcs.org for a complete listing of scholarship opportunities available.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund: HSF provides the Latino community more college scholarships and educational outreach support than any other organization in the country. HSF scholarship opportunities are available to graduating high school seniors who plan to enroll in college, community college students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university, currently enrolled college students, and graduate and professional students. Students must be of Hispanic heritage, be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents, have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and apply for federal financial aid using the FAFSA. Air Force ROTC Scholarships: The Air Force ROTC High School Scholarship Program provides 3- and 4-year scholarships in three different types to high school seniors. The application process is the same for each type.
· Type 1 – pays full college tuition, most fees and $900 per year for books. Approximately 5 percent of our 4-year scholarship winners will be offered a Type-1 scholarship (mostly in technical fields).
· Type 2 – pays college tuition and most fees up to $15,000 and pays $900 per year for books. Approximately 20 percent of our 4-year scholarship winners will be offered a Type-2 scholarship (mostly in technical fields). If a student attends an institution where the tuition exceeds $15,000 per year, then he/she pays the difference. All 3-year scholarships are Type 2.
· Type 7 – pays full college tuition, fees and $900 per year for books, but the student MUST attend a college/university where the tuition is less than $9,000 per year, OR a public college/university in which the student qualifies for the in-state tuition rate.

If a student receives a Type-7 offer but wishes to attend a college/university where they do not qualify under the guidelines above, the student can convert the 4-Year Type-7 scholarship to a 3-Year Type-2 scholarship. You cannot activate a Type-7 scholarship at a non-qualifying school and pay the difference.
Living Expenses
Upon activation, all scholarship cadets receive a nontaxable monthly allowance (stipend) during the academic year. Currently, the monthly stipend is $300 for freshmen, $350 for sophomores, $450 for juniors and $500 for seniors.
Other Details
All 4-year scholarships activate in the fall of your freshman year. All 3-year scholarships activate in the fall of your sophomore year. All 3-year scholarship designees must complete AFROTC training during their freshman year in order to retain eligibility to activate their scholarships at the start of their sophomore year.
Travel Expenses
All high school scholarship winners are authorized travel pay from your home to your Air Force ROTC detachment. You will receive reimbursement approximately 30 days after the start of school. The following items will be needed to complete an application:
· Social Security Number
· Information on officer training programs (if applicable)
· Information on any arrests you may have had (if applicable)
· Password choice – you will have the ability to save your application and complete it at a later date. Be sure to remember your
password.
This application is for students who will begin college in the fall of 2009. To be eligible you must be either graduating from High School in spring of 2009 or have already graduated from High School and have never been a full time college student. NOTE: For High School seniors that are graduating in 2008 and are planning on attending college full time after graduation from High School, please contact the AFROTC Detachment at the college you plan to attend or email AFROTC for more scholarship opportunities. This application is not for use by active-duty members of the military.
 
COSTCO SCHOLARSHIP: The Costco Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to highly qualified underrepresented minority students who wish to attend Seattle University or the University of Washington. Students are considered for the Costco Scholarship as part of the normal financial aid process at each of these two universities. To learn more about the
specific application procedures for the Costco Scholarship Fund, please contact: Seattle University Office of Student Financial Services, University Services Building, 900 Broadway, Seattle, WA 98122-4340. For specific questions regarding the Costco Scholarship Fund at Seattle University, you may email financialservices@seattleu.edu or call 206-296-2000 and select option 2.

Illustrators of the Future Contest : Award varies $500-$5000. Website http://www.writersofthefuture.com.
The Illustrators of the Future Contest is open to artists from all nations. One entry is considered three black and white works illustrating a science fiction or fantasy story with no recurring theme. Your entry may not have been previously published. There are four quarterly deadlines each year (September 30, December 31, March 31 and June 30). You may send an entry at anytime, however you can only have one entry per quarter; your entry will be entered in the current quarter. Send photocopies only. Individual artists retain copyrights. Three prizes per quarter of $500 each and a yearly grand prize of $4000 are offered. Applicable Majors: Science Fiction, Fantasy Art.
