Elementary School Curriculum

Reading and writing Fast ForWord
In the majority of classrooms we will use an “intervention” program in reading and writing. Intervention programs are specifically designed to bring students to higher levels of reading achievement in a 6-7 week period of time. Writing is also infused into class-work. In kindergarten we teach students their letters and letter sounds as well as simple “sight words.”

Fast Forword (Reading)This program will be offered at all elementary school sites. Fast ForWord is computer assisted instruction that has been shown to make a positive difference for students who did not build the prior knowledge of phonemic awareness which is a skill necessary for success in reading. Fast ForWord is a reading program and will serve approximately 30 students at each site. Students who are identified as having special needs in grades 4,5,6 will be targeted for this program. Summer school staff will determine which students will be placed in Fast ForWord.

Math Multi-Sensory Instruction
MathWe use a program called “Summer Success Math” which complements our regular math instruction during the school year. Again, this is meant to be an intervention program that brings students to higher levels of functioning in 6-7 weeks.

Multi-sensory instruction will be offered at Russian Jack Elementary. Registration for MSI summer school requires a separate form. Parents who are interested in MSI summer school can contact Jan Maki, MSI coordinator, at 742-4879.

Students who are currently in MSI classrooms and/or students who struggle in the areas of reading, writing or spelling can be referred for MSI summer school (this is a separate registration).

Lexia

Lexia is a web based supplemental reading program that supports both Houghton Mifflin and Harcourt reading – the adopted curriculum. Lexia is not meant to eliminate direct instruction, but for practice after a skill is introduced or as an intervention when students experience difficulty. The program can be as simple as working with the number of sounds in a word, or as complex as working with Greek and Latin roots.  The program supports English Language Learners as well as those needing interventions.
