Greetings Chugiak Families!
Happy Holidays! As we finish up one semester and prepare to start the second half of the year, I know that we are providing our students the knowledge, skills, attitudes and character necessary to carry them into adulthood. It has been my pleasure to work with the students, staff, parents, and the community to ensure a positive high school experience.
Second semester will be the start of our Professional Learning Communities. PLC’s will run from 7:15am-8:00am every Monday morning. This schedule will begin on January 8th, the first Monday back at school. Classes will begin at 8:15am on Mondays only. School buses will run on a normal schedule and students have the opportunity to work on homework or study during this time. The library, cafeteria and gym will be open for student use.
Students who do not ride the bus will not be expected to be at school until classes begin at 8:15. Teachers have already set goals pertaining to student engagement, improving attendance, student and parent connectivity, cohesive transitions and other school and district goals.
Good attendance is an important component of student success. It is no coincidence that our highest achieving students have excellent attendance. For students who struggle with school, good attendance is critical for success. It is difficult to teach our students who are often absent or tardy. Please help us help your children by supporting good attendance habits.
Chugiak’s Implementing Consistent Expectations Team (I.C.E.) has continued to meet regularly with a focus on promoting digital citizenship in our students. The goal of the team is to work with students and parents to bridge the gap with cell phone use. Our school screening of Screenagers was met with resistance by the students (and some concerning behavior); however, I.C.E will continue to work on a policy that focuses on educational and responsible use of technology.
A special thanks to the 30 parents and community members who made our Exploring Your Futurecareer event a huge success. Our Juniors and Seniors were very grateful to hear directly from a wide variety of experts from all types of career paths. Without the volunteer presenters, this unique learning opportunity would not have been possible. Students walked away from the sessions with new ideas, information and excitement about post-secondary options. We look forward to additional opportunities to partner with parents and community members.
Student schedules for second semester are viewable in Student and Parent Connect. Please have your student review their schedule over break to ensure their preparedness for a smooth first day back. They will not receive a hardcopy of their schedule because of the electronic accessibility but they can always have a copy printed in the Student Services Center, the library or by visiting their counselor.
I hope each and every one of you experience a wonderful holiday season, and no matter what your personal faith, beliefs, or traditions, that you’ll make time to enjoy your families and loved ones.
