Need to keep ER families together
Parent
ERES
Combine HSs, turn ERHS into K-8 School, combine ERHS and CHS. Is Mt. Spurr an option?
Parent
ERES and ERHS
Don’t combine HSs, it will only displace more teachers and students. Someone mentioned Kennedy. Is there a reason that’s not an option. Can we move the servers?
Parent
ERES
Do we have an estimated date of when a decision will be made about next year? Regarding before and after school care (YMCA, etc.), child is being bused now, but have our before and after school programs been considered?
Parent, ASD
ERHS, ERES
Regarding the lottery, parents are being asked to make decisions about their children without all of the information. Also, are there rules about using churches? There seem to be churches available to house ERES. Has this option been looked into?
Parent
ERES
Will teachers from ERES still have jobs?
Parent
ERES
Preschool teachers, will they still have their jobs?
Parent
ERES
If it’s determined that ERES will be replaced, will currently displaced teachers have the choice to go back?
Parent, ASD substitute teacher
BWABC
High concern at her school. Feel on shaky ground about their program and are fearful about changes to it (depending what happens in ER). Their school is now full. Also has concerns about rezoning. Heard today that we are due for some rezoning. Those that make decisions need to make ones that impact as few families as possible.
Parent
ERES, Gruening, ERHS, MCollege
Boundaries and Zoning. I can see Homestead, but it is not my home school. Couldn’t get all of my children in on a zone exception. To see 62%of capacity is difficult when my kids couldn’t get into Homestead. Now, ironically, I have students split at two elementary schools including Homestead.
Parent
ERES
Is the ground safe to rebuild ERES in the same place?
Parent
Homestead, Gruening
Rebuilding ERES is a pipe dream. It’ll be two years at the earliest. Instead of putting students through two moves, just readjust the boundaries and make the hard changes now.
ASD
Alpenglow
Based upon last night’s conversation, it’ll be 2 years from breaking ground before students could start school if ERES is rebuilt, and that’s after all the planning for the school.
ASD
BWABC
ER is growing with huge neighborhoods, and nothing has been rezoned. It needed to be done 10 years ago, and should be done now. If we rezone for the short term, will existing programs (Optional, ABC) remain intact? Will a school-within-a-school model be used?
Parent
ERES
If we’re going to rezone we need to do it with the intent of doing it a second time after ERES is rebuilt.
Parent
Homestead, ERES PreK
Part of the reason we bought our house was because of the neighborhood school and the ability to eventually walk to school. Rezoning would potentially cause us to be farther away.
Parent
ERES
We get busing because of where we live. If we rezone, and are grandfathered in, would busing be provided?
Parent,
ERES
I want to know if the maintenance records are available for ERES. The building was in great disrepair. Is the district going to come out and share that that is the reason the building didn’t fare well during the EQ?

Has the idea of portables been considered so we can keep families together? Is a portion of the school usable; can you close off the section of the school not useable? Modify the useable classroom to accommodate students and staff.
Community Member
Are there any locations being considered where ERES can stay together?
Community Member
Chugiak HS & Chugiak ES
Strongly agree that we need to keep ERES together. Consider the social emotional component. Keeping staff and students together maintains these connections. Bring the school together as soon as possible. Students need the staff.
GMS Teacher & Parent
ERES
Will the recommendation by the administration go before the school board for a vote? Will there be public testimony prior to the vote? I strongly advocate that any decision is made through the school board.
ERES teacher
ERES
I don’t feel that anything has been transparent. Decisions should be a transparent and in front of the school board. I want a community vote with families and staff. We will fight to keep our school family together. That is why we are here, because it is unfair to take this decision away from the families.
ERES Employee
How are we going to vote on bonds given the 60 day timeline from FEMA? How do we give input on that?
Parent
ERES
I’m new to the district, but feel part of the community. I understand that everyone is going through a traumatic situation and I hear people say there has been a lack of transparency. Are the building assessment reports available to the public (current reports and the 1980’s GMS report that has never been released by ASD)? I want to see the preliminary reports of the buildings and the final evaluation reports. Why hasn’t the ASD made these reports available so we can see what is going on? When people don’t get information there is chaos. I don’t feel that we are getting the information that we need to be informed.
Parent
Homestead
Are we looking at lessons learned from other earthquakes and natural disasters in the Lower 48 or the 1964 earthquake to inform decisions and actions?
What does ASD need help with? Where can the community go to volunteer their help?
ERES Employee
As ERES has been split up we are seeing that we have lost resources (e.g., school nurse). If you are going to split up ERES, will you staff those schools appropriately? As an ERES employee I want to be with my staff and students. No where on the survey does it bring up PreK for ERES. It brings up optional, but I feel like not all of ERES is represented on that survey.
ERES Employee
The relationships that the students and teachers develop are valuable. When you break up the school and we loose staff we can’t help the students like we could when we are together. I’m at Homestead & I don’t get to see our kids very often. When I do see them, they are excited to see me. We need to find a way to keep people together.
ERES Employee
There is only one department chair for the 15 schools in Eagle River/Chugiak. You need to consider IEPs in the cost analysis of keeping students and staff together. The money that comes in for those IEPs offset the cost of not keeping the school together.
Parent
ERES
It is very clear that we all want to be together. We will take anything to be together. Consider portables, Mt. Spurr, a location in Anchorage and have a delayed start time. For example is the old ANCCS building off of Muldoon available?
Community Member
Combine CHS & ERHS at Chugiak and move GMS & ERES to the ERHS site.
Parent
ERES
Next year have the all the freshman on JBER go to Bartlett to start transitioning JBER high school students to Bartlett over time (let the ones who are currently at CHS and ERHS continue through graduation if they want). This will free up room to combine GMS and ERES at the ERHS site. Getting on base will be ridiculous for our families.
Parent
Can we continue what is going on right now next year if a building doesn’t become available?
ERES Employee
This isn’t ideal. Our related services staff are teaching in closets to meet students’ IEP needs. Even if you rezone, there is not enough room to take care of kids properly.
ERES Employee
It feels like we are fighting and we shouldn’t have to fight for our teacher, students and families. If you break us apart, for how long? What is short term (1 year, 2 years, 3 years, more)? Why do we have to advocate so hard to stay together? It was a gut punch to lose our principal who has helped turn around our school. We want to stay together as a family.
GMS Employee & Parent
ERES
The COO didn’t provide as much information as I had hoped. The district is either building or repairing ERES and will have to pay for it up front before getting reimbursed from FEMA. My feeling is that the solution determined for next year will continue in subsequent years. We need to keep the school intact in the short term so that we aren’t permanently split in the long term. A survey needs to be put out again with the ideas put further in the short term survey and community meetings. Remove the ideas from the original survey that did not get community support. The GMS short term decision seems like it was made before receiving input from the community. The ad hoc committee hasn’t been formed. The administration has not owned up to the mistakes that have been made. Not leading by example.
I have friends who live in Florida. After the hurricane they ran two schools in the same building with staggered schedules (morning and afternoon) to keep kids and staff together. I heard of a similar process when the volcano erupted in Hawaii. Can we do that?
Parent
ERES
We are a military family and we want consistency for our kids. We move frequently and keeping friends and bonds with teachers is very important. I don’t want the staff to be split up. The staff are amazing.
Parent
Homestead
I purchased a house because of schools and would not want to be rezoned. For any future surveys sse a stacked ranking option to get better information.
Parent
ERES
Very concern about the comments made by the Birchwood head of the PTA at the school board meeting. It was offensive. I’m concerned at how welcome they are where they are going. We want to support a positive, welcoming environment. (Note: Another parent who substitutes at Birchwood reassured this parent that the comment of the Birchwood PTA parent was not reflective of what was happening at the school. While the students don’t really interact, the Birchwood teachers and the principal have been very supportive of the ERES optional teachers and students.)
Parent
ERES
I echo the importance of the autonomy of ERES. The district hasn’t said that it is important to keep the ERES family connected and together as a unit. I fear that the temporary split will slowly become permanent.
The Muldoon Sams Club building is not being used. Our students could stay together there. I don’t know if the municipality could lease that building for a temporary solution for either ERES or GMS.
Employee & Community Member
Rebuild ERES and name it after Mr. Lester, the former principal. He is a legend in our community.
Parent
GMS, ERES
I am concerned about a rumor that ERES and GMS will be permanently closed to solve a budget problem. I hope that the decisions that come from administration truly take into consideration the community’s concerns and feedback.
Parent
Is there a plan to release the building damage assessment? There is a high interest from the community to get this information. When information is not there it creates uncertainty. The parent comment that was made at the school board meeting will happen more often and create more animosity if we don’t have information.
Parent & Substitute Teacher for ASD
ERES
Have K-8 at ERHS (combine ERES & GMS). Keep the students separate, but use the same facility. Seems like the cheapest option.
Parent

CHS has held 2000+ students in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. They can have relocatables if you combine CHS and ERHS. Keep junior high kids separate from high school kids. Has anyone thought of Eagle River splitting off into it’s own school district so we get our own funding?
Student
CHS
Right now at CHS, we rarely see the middle schoolers during the day so I don’t think you have to worry about that. I like the idea of ERHS and CHS coming together.
I want to acknowledge ERHS staff & their families because they are connected to their school.

Parent

Even if it is approved to rebuild ERE, it would be a 2 year plan. ASD should consider moving 8th grade at MLMS to Chugiak, MLMS = 6/7, put 6th grade of 3 schools in MLMS. Opens space at the elementary sites.
If I would have had the agenda sheet with the data at the survey time, I could have filled it out with more knowledge.
Would like to see a larger breakdown - how many 6th graders, how many 1st graders? How much will my opinion influence?

Where did the ideas come from that were put on the survey? Our parent boards were not asked. Who had these ideas when it seems it was not the Eagle River community?
ASD Staff/Parent
ERE, Chugiak, Gruening, MLMS
Is there a projected date for the 20-21 school year to determine if ERE is fixable or will be rebuilt? Will there then be another short term plan? What is the timeline for the long term plan? Is there even one?
Is ASD taking into consideration w/ data collection on student enrollment, the impact that could happen if they choose not to move ERE to one location? Are they considering those families that do not want to go to the school they have been slated to go to in the 19-20 school year? Don’t forget the families that will want to zone-in to other schools.
Now that things have settled, many of us are still processing everything. Can we have more counselors brought in for staff support?
The students I work with were split between Homestead and Birchwood. If ERE is split, will ASD provide extra counseling services/non-academic supports to check in on the students that have started in a new school? Concerned about the SEL needs of the students.
Parent

Heard rumors that ERE teachers need to have resumes together, because they may get pink slipped. Do they have to reapply for their jobs?
Parent
ERE
Biggest anxiety is what happens long term? Will we still exist as an ERE family? Why is this even a question? Why aren’t we part of the conversation for the long-term solution? Can we have transparency with this process? Why can’t I just assume my school will be rebuilt? Why will it take two years? Can we apart of this convo?
Parent
ERE
Combine high schools at CHS, house Gruening and ERHS at ERHS.
Grandparent
Gruening, ERHS
Put ERE in one place and relieve the stress; leave Greuning at CHS.
Hearing the teachers have to reapply shows no support for them; disposable.
Parent
ERE
Kids split at BWABC and Homestead; ERE split between 3 schools is not working; our community/family has been ripped apart.
What are the options w/ Kennedy? Put it back together in the summer. Add portables if need space. Solution needs to sustain for several years (for when/if rebuild takes place).
Parent
ERE
Wants ERE to stay together even though there are the neighborhood and optional programs; programs mesh well.
Parent
ERE, ERHS, Gruening
Don’t want my high school student moved from ERHS; very different communities. Don’t split optional and neighborhood at ERE.
Parent
ERE
Entire ERE school community is welcoming and loved whenever children come to the school; school is where they are loved unconditionally; we are homesick for that.
Community Member

Have to remember that it’s not just ERHS and CHS, Bartlett has to be included with the numbers.
Parent
Ravenwood
If ERE was not combined together, you will go 1-2 years longer of 3 schools at or above capacity, not accounting for growth. Big logistical problem if children within a family are split up.
Mt. Spurr/Kennedy best option for ERE.
Parent
ERE
What is ASD doing for students that want to switch schools? Will ASD open up more enrollment for Homestead for families that would prefer to stay?
Parent
ERE
Idea: Have a preferred lottery (zone specific) for ER families to go an ER school.
Teacher
ERE
If they end up splitting up ERE zone, make sure there is a solution for kids getting their basic needs met. The food provided has not been satisfactory. Currently taking about 25 mins out of the academic day to feed the kids fruit loops, graham crackers, cheesitz, etc.
Teacher
ERE
We are more than teachers for our students; whenever we make decisions for our school, remember what is best for kids. What our community, parents, kids want. We are often overlooked by people making these decisions for us. Ask us what our ideas are for solutions. It should always go back to the kids.

ER Optional an Chugiak HS
Heard a couple of ideas last night that she thought were good:
-Move ER to Chugiak and make the ERHS building open to Gruening and adding 6th grade to Gruening helping to relieve the crowding.
-It feels like a real bummer to be separated into a number of small rooms for this event. Would have liked to have heard all the comments/ideas.
-The ER Optional is more than four classrooms. Has a culture that is different and uses a lot of community space to work together. Need a hallway that connects them, a community gathering space, and place for teachers to work together. They need to go somewhere with a supportive principal and staff that can understand how the program operates and can be supportive. Lisa Prince needs an assistant principal. She and the staff have been asking for help for years.
-Idea of moving the school to JFK, which would be great to keep everyone together if it could be practically worked out. If parents can contact folks or help support making this happen, she’ll be willing to make this happen. Wants to know what the capacity would be at Kennedy if it was turned back into a school.

Wants to know if the District will provide transportation to neighborhood ERES students who attend the Optional program if the Optional program moves because otherwise they would have to pull their students, which would be devastating.
Staff
Sped, Many elementary schools in the ER area
Major concerns that students with the greatest need for supports may actually get less support because of the overpopulation of the schools.
Parent
Disagrees with the idea of combining ERHS and Chugiak. Researched the schools and knows that ERHS is higher rated. Doesn’t want her student to attend a lower rated school. Would want to make sure the quality of the programs didn’t decline, if combined.
-Some things have changed with ER students going to Homestead due to space/schedule limitations. (For example Military Lunch program with their Military Family Life Counselor (MFLC).
Parent
ER Optional
Could ERES and Gruening be combined into ERHS and put ERHS in Chugiak to keep ERES and Gruening intact?
Parent

Thrilled to see Homestead full. Would recommend putting JBER students at Bartlett, combining ERHS and
Chugiak, and then combining ERES and Gruening in ERHS.
Parent
Homestead
Believes it’s important for all of her students to go to the same school. Interconnectedness of the family is important for her students. More important to have siblings staying together than worrying about what building they end up in.
Parent
Alpenglow and Gruening
Understands that not everyone is going to be 100% happy with whatever happens. Feels strongly about combining middle schoolers together, high schoolers together, and elementary students together. Believes so many good things could happen with the high schools together. Doesn’t like how they’re currently compared to each other.
-Very nervous about 7th graders mixing with high school students.
-As part of the military, JBER should be affiliated with Bartlett, which then opens up more space in the ER area.
Staff
Not an advocate of the two high schools combining. Has had students in both schools. Each worked great for them individually and having high school options within the ER community is a strength. The rivalry has only been fun. Would be very hard for a junior to go to a new high school to graduate. Need to be mindful of the identity of each school in the community and how high school students identify as a member of that particular school.
-Perhaps all 8th graders go to their respective high schools. Believes the 8th grade staff could support them. Then put all 6th and 7th graders at Mirror Lake, freeing space in elementary schools.
Parent
ER Optional
Her high school student had to choose between specific programs as both schools didn’t have all programs.
-HS students have had to give up some after school activities at Chugiak because of middle school students being in the building.
Parent

3rd generation community member. Superficially, the idea of rezoning the ERES area sounds nice, but not enough information to know how that would work and impact class sizes. Daughter’s kindergarten class currently has 23. It frightens her to think about what might happen to class sizes. Interesting ideas have come out but logistical concerns:
-ERES in a high school. How do they reach sinks to wash hands?
-Using a base school? Parent access concerns.
-Supports the recombination of the high schools, but concerned about combining middle and high school students. Wants to see Gruening have a space that is appropriate to them where they’re not being combined with a different age group.
-Hard time to make an educated decision on best course of action because doesn’t have enough information.
Parent
The uncertainty is hard. Is there any way to look at the lottery to see if there are parents who will move to other schools?
Principal
Homestead
Has heard that parents and families feel they don’t have enough information to make informed decisions, especially since the survey came out.
-It has been a joy and pleasure to have the ERES folks at Homestead. The staff is fantastic, and the kids are a delight.
Parent
ER Optional
Will reports of the actual damage to ERES be made public? Parents would like to know. A data clearinghouse would help alleviate all the rumors.
Parent
Feels like parents are being spoon-fed information rather than being given real data from which to learn.
Parent
ER Optional
The stress that the ERES staff is under is unbelievable. The staff then takes that stress to the classroom and to students, which then results in stress coming home. Would like staff to have it in writing that staff can return home to their position at ERES when all is said and done. This would relieve so much stress.

Student
CHS
Student involvement important - CHS students think it would be a great idea (to combine) but ERHS students might not feel this way.
CHS students greeted GMS students on the first day. Believes that having the same schedule would allow more positive interaction.
Parent
Regarding the upcoming ballot with school bonds, what will be on the bonds and what are the amounts? How much is allotted for the ER community?
Student
CHS
Why are the CHS students not being informed about what is happening and why do they have no way to voice their opinion? Should have a meeting to inform students about what is happening.
Student
CHS
Today there was a bullying situation with tripping and spitting. CHS students yelled at the kid doing it. If we continue to combine the schools, the MS students would likely be more mature, and the high school students would act more responsibly as well.

Military family- rezoning is a perfect option. There were no good options on the survey (e.g., Clark/Central). I bought a house for our kids to stay in Eagle River. Don’t make a situation worse by busing our kids into Anchorage. How do they separate CHS kids and GMS kids? Consider moving ERHS to CHS as a short term/long term solution.
Student
CHS
Why aren’t students are being informed about what is going on? We need information and the ability to give feedback.
Substitute Teacher
Why aren’t the students represented on the survey? Why don’t we ask them what they want? They should have a voice. Invite students to the meetings.
Parent

What is the number of military kids and how many are bused? Is all this planning going to go out the window next week when the budget comes out? ERHS really appreciates the small school and academic culture. I am not in in favor of one large school. We would like to know plan sooner rather than later.

We are looking at lottering our student next year for middle school. Is transportation considered (including after school) if going to MLMS next year?
Parent

My child has has a fabulous experience with 7th graders at CHS. Why divide up to three different schools and bus them? Why was that even an option on the survey. Why are we stressing about a temporary solution? Shout out to Ms. Parson’s, Ms. G, and the awesome staff at GMS. You need a forum for incoming 7th grade parents and students.
Parent

Frustrated with feeling that the decision has already been made for next year. We would like reassurance of separation of the two schools (GMS & CHS). Lack of information on how it is working. Rezoning elementary schools seems possible based on the numbers..

Move ERES to JFK. I don’t know why ERHS was built. I’m not anti-ERHS, but I don’t like to see the community separated. We don’t need two high schools. It’s a waste of taxpayer money. Merging the high schools would offer more academic and athletic options. Move GMS to ERHS. Make GMS grades 6-8 to offer all 6th graders same opportunity in Eagle River.
Parent
CHS
Combine ERHS and CHS. Do CHS graduates have a voice about lack of options in electives? They have valuable input. Consider the mental health of our students who take a bus from ERES where they feel the trauma. Give them some stability.
Parent
CHS, ERES Optional
It would be fabulous if all of ERES could be at JFK. I like the idea of both high schools together. With them separate we have to choose between electives (e.g., robotics and WDS). It would be better if students in our small town didn’t have to pick. Good opportunity for long term planning. The ERES Optional program should stay together. They need community space and theater space. I support the teachers at ERES and praise our principal, Lisa Prince.

Enrollment has dropped at CHS over the years. Enrollment has dropped at ERHS over the years. Why has the capacity number dropped for CHS over the years? There were well over 2000 students here for many years. It’s disingenuous to say capacity at CHS is 1618. This has divided the community. Put GMS 6-8 at ERHS. Why are we dabbling at a short term solution when we can go to a long term solution that people want? Stop spending money on the short term and go directly to the long term

The feedback is get is that teachers don’t feel listened to by ASD. We should have been treated as respectful adults and been able to speak in an open forum and not separated into small groups. There have been no issues so far for GMS student. I don’t want them separated. The survey was biased toward the current option as the other choices were awful. We’ve had no bad experience with GMS and CHS staff/administration. Combine ERHS and CHS. Add numbers of enrollment at Clark and Bartlett to the flier.

We are trying to make the best of it now. Both sets of students are missing out. Combine ERHS and CHS. Why have two of the smallest in Eagle River/Chugiak? We should have one really good school.
Parent
ERHS, Homestead (6th grade)
Keep younger kids together. Unite CHS and ERHS. Stop overwhelming teachers with more students at the elementary level.
Parent
ERHS, three at Homestead (one 6th grade)
Looking at enrollment numbers it doesn’t make sense. One good school with all the electives would enrich students lives- stop limiting options for our students. The survey was horrible. Where do we go from here after the meeting on the February 21st. Felt that leaving the gym was diffusing us-why didn’t you keep us together for the community meeting.

Are we looking at 2019-20 or 2020 and beyond? What is tonight all about? When are we expecting to have the structural report from the engineers? Build it into the schedule. What would that look like for staffing if the school was split between town and MLMS? CHS was originally a 7-12 school, it worked then. What did it look like? Why are we not looking at how it was done in the past?

What repairs are you suggesting that will make an unstable school ready in one year?
Parent
CHS, GMS, & ERES
Please do not combine the two high schools--do not exceed the capacity. Have concerns with 7th grader being integrated in with high school students. Partition CHS to separate them within the school day. No shared passing time or bathrooms. Consolidate sections and have clear signage.
Parent
Why would you combine middle school and high school when you have two high schools that are under utilized? I don’t like having 12 year olds with older kids. It is crazy to not mix appropriate grade levels.
Parent
Elementary
Is the District recanting their decision as to having GMS at CHS? People don’t want uncertainty. Take the secondary JBER students and put them in Anchorage schools and move the rest of the students to MLMS. It would work as a temporary solution. Consider the liability.
Someone had to have a conversation with an 18 year old that they can’t date a 12 year old because it is a legal issue
Parent
ERHS
The idea that ERHS will go to CHS is stressing us out as a family. Their students will lose all the things they have been working for over the years. High school sets the stage for life and they are thriving at ERHS.
Parent
ERHS
Will the feedback actually change decisions you’ve already made or is this just a therapy session so we can vent? If the survey doesn’t fit your decision will you change your decision? It appears you will be stripping all the JBER students and be sending them to schools in town and moving ERHS to CHS.
Parent
When will they have an answer? What is the hard date for next year? Whatever decision is made needs to be sustainable for several more years--we have to look to the long term for what is best for our children.
Parent
Will the information from FEMA make it longer than a year? Will that be made next week when you get that info from FEMA? The article in the STAR and ADN makes it seem impossible to move back into the school. As a parent I’m not ok. I want information from construction/engineers that the building will be safe. I want to see the final report. Make sure the locker rooms are separate and there is no crossover (18 year olds should not be 12 year olds)
Parent
How are the CHS kids doing with having to share with GMS? (Response from a CHS student - We don’t hardly see them, not much interaction. Things are going rather well, but they are not really ready for HS. They aren’t grown-up enough. Messes things up a little bit.)
Parent
Is it affecting the extra-curricular things?
Parent
Are they sharing athletic programs? It appears to be working with Drama, but it changes the social construct.
Parent
Mr. Lang texts students every day as to where his classes will meet as he has no classroom
Parent
Why are not just looking at re-zoning the MS and leaving the high schools alone? We need to stop stressing out the high school staff/students/parents and just deal with GMS.
Parent
Are we taking into consideration the over crowding in elementary and looking at GMS as a 6-8? Are you leaning toward re-zoning elementary? You will have a short term decision soon and then as information comes out you will have a longer term plan, the next two years might be different?
Parent
Is JFK elementary on the table as a place for ER elementary?
Parent
How is it going for GMS teachers?
Are there spaces it the building that will be repurposed to improve building use--moving out maintenance for classrooms?
Make sure the community knows that we are still having extra-curricular activities and options for kids

You mitigated the emergency and now in deliberate planning stage. You did a good job and now do what you need to do to minimize the disruption and capacity problems. Please address the concerns of combining 7-12 grades -- would be very disappointing to be sent to schools in Anchorage.
Parent
The really great thing for those kids coming to GMS, are the GMS teachers. The comfort the teachers gave was amazing.
Parent
Do principals get to give input? They are doing so much--Lisa Prince is working so hard.

I kinda love the idea of bringing the middle school together. ERHS is set up to have another wing added on for GMS--keeps separation but puts GMS in a new building. Community rivals is a good thing and it would be sad to lose that. Incredibly detrimental to put high school together as they have different social structures--offer completely different experiences.

I have an 8th grader going to ERHS and I have concerns with incoming 6th graders. ASD did a fantastic job in placing students in school, but I do not feel a school within a school is good and 6th graders being with high schools.
At lunch the middle schoolers are getting leftovers

I appreciate the purpose of the agenda. This is a short term solution, but when do you anticipate we will come up with a long term solution. The majority of ERHS is military. Long term plans will affect military plans. There are significant issues that need to be addressed. Military operates summer to summer. The large influx of soldiers and airmen need to know what they need to do with their students. When is long term solution going to happen?

Shared a concern of a parent who doesn’t want 6th grader with high schoolers. Consider the emotional and physical reasons. Can we explore bringing 6th grade to GMS? They miss a year of world language, music, etc. This is a disadvantage compared to MLMS. My elementary school kid had 32 kids in his 6th grade class.

I took kids to MLMS for 6th grade experience. Also military family. We move in July. Concerned with home prices tumbling. Chose the area for home because ERHS. If things change, how will this affect the rating of schools and neighborhoods.

I have a 6th grader going to GMS next year. I share the same concerns as previous parents. How many jobs is this going to cost our community? At what point should I write heated letters to Governor, Legislator, etc., Are they planning to move on, or is this it?

Fantastic transition so far… but, the worry is the other experience that kids are not getting outside the classroom. The first dance? Wacko? We don’t have bases and time. Worried this will be a permanent solution. Kids are in a transitional time, but I am not able to help. My 7th grader is missing the middle school experience.

Are these kids going to be sent to Anchorage? Horrible idea. These kids have been exposed to too much so far.

How long did it take to build ERHS? Since it was bonded… maybe 3-4 years. A 2-year process for a new school. This is not short term. This is long term. We are worried about our teachers. District needs to recognize that these adults also need structure to keep sanity. ASD needs to communicate well to reduce rumors.
Parent
I grew up in Southern CA. Every school had portables. Are we discussing relos? Who is going to use the portables?
ASD employee
Who is going to use the portables. I have concerns.
Parent, Employee, Community member
How come no one in this room does not know about relocatables as an option? Communication has been horrible.
Parent
I lost it when I got an email saying “thank you for the feedback”--- not correct. Feedback was response to the earthquake. Not the arrangement at CHS. Frustrated with the lack of communication. I chose my neighborhood for the smaller good schools. Information is being thrown at us. Need more opportunities to provide feedback
Parent
Not ok with my kid going to Clark or Central. I hope that is not the plan.
ASD Employee
These types of meetings -- face-to-face with community members are very valuable. As a staff member I do not feel we have had the opportunity to provide feedback.
How do we keep middle school sports going at the same time as high school. I’d like someone to tell us what to do.

6th graders should not be in middle school. I am seeing my kids learning bad things while here at CHS. She is losing her sense of community and innocence. The things she shares, shock me. As a substitute, I see things that shock me as well. My youngest would not survive Clark or Central.
ASD employee
Innocence… when I am at MLMS no one asks me to use bathroom. Here at CHS, they ask me a lot. High school is a different scenario. Middle school students feel intimidated by high schoolers. I advocate for separation.
Parent
If you are thinking of relos… why are we not thinking putting the relos at MLMS… there is capacity?
ASD employees
ERHS, MLMS, CHS
Listening to elementary and middle school parents… I feel for you. I’d like the district to consider long term solutions. Add a wing to ERHS. We are concerned about the closure of our school. We don’t believe it is a good idea. Let’s build something long term so we can invest in kids.
Should be discussion, if relos are coming in, Middle school kids can be house 3, that connect to house 4. We need to have a better solution instead of an easy solution.
Parent
Some GMS students will be feeding into CHS-- should we not re-zone now to MLMS so they are with the same population? Anyway to approach it that way?
ASD/Comm/Parent
Redraw boundaries
ASD
We are told crews are coming into CHS to remodel, rewire… all this $$ spent to just survive a day at a time. Those funds should probably be spent on a better solution.
ASD
If GMS stays here for next year. Do parents have the opportunity to take them to MLMS?- Transportation?
Parent
Provide transportation for zone exempt students should be an option
Parent/comm. member
We are all dealing with this in our own homes. Are we going to dump money where it is not needed. Why spend money if there is a better long term solutions?
We all knew GMS was falling apart. As a community we want to work together… but we want to look at the return on investment. We like GMS. Lay it out. Start giving us number of cost, timeline. That is what is going to help us.
Comm. member
There is value having a school in our neighborhood. Even if it is cheaper to build in Powder Ridge, we prefer and know there is value to having a school in our neighborhood
Parent/Comm member/ASD
As a zone exempt parent, I want to share that your child will give up time, friends. “We paid, we chose to pay, a cost. It was a 3 year commitment”- Hopefully my daughter will go to ERHS

I would be sad to lose any teacher.

Issue with survey… no option for students. It is important for them to GMS students to stay together. Even if it is short term solution.
Rumor of ERHS joining CHS---clash in culture. Does not sound like a short term solution

It will be hard for GMS student to move again. ERHS moving to CHS, will not be good either. Not safe to move to a place where there is rivalry. Freshman should not be going to a school where they are uncomfortable.
