Barbara is also talking with new families wanting to enroll for next year, making time to call them to help them plan their new school year.

Barbara had much to deal with this year-end, and she still is smiling.

Thank you, Barbara, for making all of the rest of the Frontier Staff life easier! Our hats are off to you!

  • Quyana to Shane Houser and crew at Maintenance

Last year we had a beautiful banner hanging in front of our school, welcoming everyone to Wonder Park. It got damaged in the wind and had to come down. This year I approached Maintenance about helping restore the banner to its "original glory" and to re-hang. I also asked if it could be done before the first day for students. Remarkably Shane Houser was able to get someone out here, check things out, and hang the banner the next day on sturdy plywood, drilled into the front arch, never to be wind-torn again. This act of expedient kindness was SO appreciated. Thank you, Shane and crew! You guys are the BEST.

As one of many principals who were out of the building for training when the earthquake hit, my staff jumped in and did everything that was needed to provide safety and security for my students and the school community as a whole.  They instantly moved into action to communicate with families at the drop off location, greet and aid our students arriving on buses, assuring the building was secure and safe and much, much more.  It's worth mentioning that this was all done while they sported 80's attire to show their school spirit.  Knowing the skill set of my staff enabled my stress level to lower as I worked to get to the school as soon as possible.  I'm fortunate to work with so many wonderful people.

  • Quyana to Theresa Cholok at Alaska Native Cultural Charter School morning and noon duty

At ANCCS we open our doors at 7:50 am and have supervision with a morning duty person and aides to monitor and involve kids in activities before and during breakfast. Our morning duty, Theresa Cholok, is an amazing Native role model teaching values of respect, kindness and responsibility. She greets each student, parent, and teacher every morning by name.

On the Friday of the earthquake, many teachers were just walking in to the school or planning in their classrooms. Theresa, immediately had over 200 kids ducking, covering, under tables and along the gym walls in under a minute's time. She checked the bathrooms and accounted for all students, parents and even told teachers coming in the building what to do. Theresa is a valued member of our school family and she deserves a big Quyana for her kind spirit and for keeping everyone safe during a natural disaster!

  • Quyana to Brody Ward at Information Technology

Brody deserves a huge thank you from Alaska Middle College. We have just started a new school on the main UAA campus, which means we have no ASD server and we are also dealing with UAA IT. There have been a multitude of issues from the student's chrome books to printing capability. He has come in on more than one occasion with nothing but patience and an intent to get the job done right. Brody's goal has always been student and teacher focused. He has come back and communicated with us over and over because he wants technology to work correctly to support the staff and students. The IT department is so lucky to have someone like Brody who shows us that IT is there to support us in any way we need to serve the greater student population. What a great IT guy!

You are on it, from keeping the hall tiles dry, opening car doors and greeting children as they arrive, grading papers, helping kids understand better the material that is being taught, holding baby chicks to warm them up and giving volunteers tasks to help the class out, to name only a few. I know there are many, many more things you do daily that go unnoticed, but believe me when I say I appreciate YOU so, so much.
