Last year we had a beautiful banner hanging in front of our school, welcoming everyone to Wonder Park. It got damaged in the wind and had to come down. Remarkably Shane Houser was able to get someone out here, check things out, and hang the banner the next day on sturdy plywood, drilled into the front arch, never to be wind-torn again. This act of expedient kindness was SO appreciated. Thank you, Shane and crew! You guys are the BEST.

  • Quyana to Theresa Cholok at Alaska Native Cultural Charter School morning and noon duty

At ANCCS we open our doors at 7:50 am and have supervision with a morning duty person and aides to monitor and involve kids in activities before and during breakfast. Our morning duty, Theresa Cholok, is an amazing Native role model teaching values of respect, kindness and responsibility. She greets each student, parent, and teacher every morning by name.

On the Friday of the earthquake, many teachers were just walking in to the school or planning in their classrooms. Theresa, immediately had over 200 kids ducking, covering, under tables and along the gym walls in under a minute's time. She checked the bathrooms and accounted for all students, parents and even told teachers coming in the building what to do. Theresa is a valued member of our school family and she deserves a big Quyana for her kind spirit and for keeping everyone safe during a natural disaster!

Special THANKS to Heather Jones, Principal of Chinook Elementary! When one of the Dimond HS kilns went belly up during the first week of Summer Academy, I contacted Heather to see if we could use her kiln to bisque fire some of the ceramic work. She welcomed us with open arms and even worked us in around a class in her art room. Students in ASDSA walked their artwork over from Dimond and loaded them into the kiln - the firing went off wihtout a hitch, and Heather became our hero. You are on it, from keeping the hall tiles dry, opening car doors and greeting children as they arrive, grading papers, helping kids understand better the material that is being taught, holding baby chicks to warm them up and giving volunteers tasks to help the class out, to name only a few. I know there are many, many more things you do daily that go unnoticed, but believe me when I say I appreciate YOU so, so much.
