Special Education at Anchorage School District
Our Special Education Department serves children pre-Kindergarten through age 22, providing specialized classroom instruction appropriate to student needs. We provide neighborhood school based behavior support, Life Skills, and structured learning classrooms. Other services include secondary transition services, and affective and study skills support. Related Services programs are also available through the AK State School for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program, as well as instruction for students who are Blind and Visually Impaired and school based and itinerant Related Services including Speech, Audiology, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Adapted Physical Education, and Assistive Technology. Special Education Positions
Anchorage School District employs Special Education Teachers, Related Services staff, and Special Education Teacher Assistants.
- Special Education teachers and Related Services staff are paid according to the AEA pay schedule. We offer a $5,000 signing bonus for qualifying newly hired staff.
- Special Education self-contained classroom and Related Services staff associated with AEA receive a 6% increase on their annual salary.
- Special Education paraprofessional educators are paid according to the TOTEM pay schedule. Staff with 48 credits of college or more education are eligible for a minimum extra 2% on top of their base hourly wage through the NAEOP PSP program.
- Special Education paraprofessional educators for special programs receive an extra $1.00 differential, and for behavior support receive an extra $2.00 differential, on each hour worked, not to exceed 8 hours per day.
