From the PrincipalDear Trailside Families; The added daylight sure makes a difference when doing after-school activities and events. It has been nice to have it lighter each day. I know my dogs are happy with some extra walks. I hope you and your family are enjoying it too. With more daylight comes the last 4 months of school. February is almost here and a few reminders for everyone.February 16 and 17 will be half days of school with students being released at 12:30. Lunch will be provided for students before they go home. The afternoon on those two days will be dedicated to parent-teacher conferences. Please reach out and sign up with your child's teacher. Teachers will send out directions on how to get signed up. February 18th is a day off for students and the 21st is also a holiday, so there is no school. Our 4th graders will be participating in the NAEP assessment on February 2nd. This is a national assessment in both reading and math. Students will either take the reading portion or the math portion of the test. We do not get the results of this test back, but it does help in seeing where 4th graders are across the nation academically. The weather is still chilly so please keep sending your kids with 5 points of gear, so they will stay dry outside. Recess is such a fun time unless you don't have the proper gear and then it is cold. Students are all outside for a minimum of 30 minutes at recess.I hope this newsletter finds you healthy and happy. Have a great month and please reach out with any questions or concerns.Sincerely,Heather Jones, PrincipalTrailside Elementary School

Access Testing
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Beginning February 1st, our school will be conducting a state-required assessment for English Language Learners. This assessment is called ACCESS and provides important feedback about the progress of our English Language Learners in Reading, Speaking, Listening, and Writing. Students will take the test using our school’s computers. Only students who are currently identified as members of the English Language Learners (ELL) Program will be assessed. Most of the assessments will be completed during the first few weeks of February but some may continue into March.
More information about the ACCESS assessment can be found on the Alaska Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s ACCESS page, http://education.alaska.gov/assessments/elp.
For ASD Virtual families with ELL students, our school has designated (TBA) to administer ACCESS testing for your child or children. If you are unable to bring your child or children to our school site for testing due to your family’s health and safety concerns, please complete the district survey linked here to indicate your intention to refuse ACCESS testing this spring. Your responses will be forwarded to our school to help with planning.
If you have any questions about this test, you are encouraged to contact us here at Trailside (907-742-5500). You may also contact the District’s ELL Department at 742-4452. Information about the English Language Learners Program in the Anchorage School District can be found on ASD’s website.
As always, with testing, we ask that families plan so that their students are in school and are well-rested for testing. Your patience and support for this process is very much appreciated as this assessment does provide useful information that helps our district and school improve programs for English Language Learners.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Jones
Principal

We had a great turnout even though the weather tested our limits. With that being said, the rink may be out of order until the weather gets cold again. Thank you for your patience and if you would like to volunteer to help with the rink, please contact Mr. Leiser at Leiser_Nicholas@asdk12.orgGet out and exercise!Mr. Leiser
