Selection of Members

Membership on the Multicultural Education Concerns Advisory Committee (MECAC) is voluntary and no compensation is provided for the members who serve a one-year term. MECAC members meet five times per year. The Committee consists of:
- Student representative
- Teacher representatives
- Principal representatives
- Parent representatives
Parents may represent the following ASD programs: Gifted, Special Education, Academic English Learners, Title VI Indian Education, Child in Transition, and Migrant Education - At-large members
At-large members should reflect the diversity of the student population in the Anchorage School District
Member Qualifications
Consideration is given to the following criteria when selecting members of the committee:
- Commitment to improving educational opportunities for students
- Sincere interest in the welfare of children and in quality education
- Community involvement and ability to network within the community
- Working knowledge of the Anchorage community
- Ability to function effectively as a team member, as well as a leader
- Ability to motivate others to become engaged and involved
- Commitment to attend five, two-hour committee meetings per year
- Interest in:
- Student achievement
- Parent and community involvement
- Community relations
- Curriculum adoption and implementation
- Cultural competence
- Equity and other instructional concerns
