School Calendar Changes

April 16, 2026: Message from the Superintendent
Dear ASD Community,
I want to share an important update regarding the Anchorage School District’s (ASD) 2026–27 school year calendar.
After hearing your feedback, we are bringing forward a new recommendation for the 2026–27 school year calendar. This recommendation returns the first day of school to August 19 and moves the three additional instructional days to the last quarter.
Last week, the Anchorage School Board approved multiple school year calendars, including the 2026–27 calendar, which moved the start of the school year earlier.
That change was made to increase instructional time for our students. Time in the classroom is one of the most important drivers of student success, supporting improved learning, consistent progress, and better outcomes. Protecting instructional time remains a central focus of our work.
I also want to provide important context.
As part of the recently settled contract with our partners, the Anchorage Education Association, ASD added three additional days to the year. At a time when districts across the country are reducing or considering reductions to instructional time due to budget pressures, we made the decision in partnership with our educators to increase time for student learning. That is a meaningful investment in our students, and one we believe is important to protect.
However, the timing of that agreement required us to finalize calendar decisions later than we typically would. In doing so, we did not provide families with the notice and engagement you are accustomed to and expect. For that, I take responsibility.
After listening and reflecting on the thoughtful feedback from families, individual school board members, and community partners, we will bring forward a revised recommendation for the 2026-27 calendar at next Tuesday’s School Board meeting.
This new recommendation maintains the additional instructional days for students while moving them to the second semester, eliminating the need for an earlier start date in the fall. Our goal is to provide families and staff with the clarity and time needed to plan ahead with confidence, while still protecting valuable instructional time for students.
We are also taking steps to improve how we engage our community in this process. We will revisit the calendar committee structure to make it stronger and more accessible, including creating opportunities for community members to participate in future decisions from the outset.
The updated recommendations for the 2026-27 school calendar are now posted on our school calendar webpage. You will also find a detailed FAQ that explains how we got here, what is changing, and what to expect next.
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to share feedback and engage with us. Your voice matters, and it helps us make better decisions for our district.
We recognize that many families are making plans for the upcoming school year. With a final decision from the School Board expected next week, we encourage families to wait for that confirmation before making any additional adjustments.
We are committed to learning from this and moving forward in a way that reflects both strong planning, and a continued focus on our mission to prepare all students for success in life.
With gratitude,
Dr. Jharrett Bryantt
Superintendent
Anchorage School District

Why are you considering changing the 2026–27 school year start date for a second time?
After the School Board approved the 2026–27 calendar last week, the District heard from many families, staff, and community partners. The feedback was clear: the change to the start of the school year did not provide enough notice.
The District understands that many families and partner organizations have already adjusted plans and schedules. The disruption this caused is taken seriously.
A revised recommendation is being brought forward to address those concerns while still supporting student learning.
Why didn’t families know about this earlier?
The additional three instructional days were part of a recently finalized agreement with the Anchorage Education Association. Because that agreement was reached in the Spring 2026 semester, it required decisions to be made outside of the typical timeline.
In a typical year, the District gathers feedback from families and works through a district calendar committee before bringing a recommendation to the School Board. This year’s timeline did not allow for that same level of advance engagement.
While the decision to add instructional time was made to benefit students, we recognize that families did not receive the notice they expect. We are committed to improving this process moving forward by strengthening community engagement and increasing transparency in calendar development.
If approved, when will the new first day of school be?
If approved, when will the new last day of school be?
Why are additional instructional days being added?
The additional instructional days are part of the recently approved agreement with the Anchorage Education Association and reflect a shared commitment to expanding opportunities for student learning.
Time in the classroom is one of the most important drivers of student success, supporting improved learning, consistent progress, and better academic outcomes. Maintaining these days ensures we are meeting contractual requirements while continuing to prioritize strong academic outcomes for students.
Why were the days originally placed at the beginning of the school year?
The original recommendation placed the additional days at the beginning of the school year based on input from the calendar committee. This approach helped balance instructional time between the first and second semesters, supporting pacing and continuity of learning.
After hearing feedback from families about planning impacts, the District is bringing forward a revised recommendation that maintains the additional days while returning the start of school to August 19th.
What should families do right now?
How will the process improve moving forward?
What about the 2027-28 and 2028-29 calendars?
Future school year calendars will continue to include the additional instructional days outlined in the most recent agreement.
The School Board approved the 2027-28 and 2028-29 school year calendars at its April 6 meeting. While the board retains the ability to revise calendars, the District plans to move forward with the 2027-28 and 2028-29 calendars as approved.
What change is being considered to the 2026–27 school year calendar?
When will the Board vote on this new recommendation?
How can the community provide feedback to the Board prior to the vote?
Community members can share feedback in the following ways:
- Email the School Board: SchoolBoard@asdk12.org
Testify at the School Board meeting (in person, by phone, or in writing):
