School Calendar Changes

Last night, the Anchorage School Board approved the updated calendar. The first day of school will be August 19, and the three additional instructional days will take place during the last quarter of the school year.
We know many families and partner organizations have been waiting for a final answer. Thank you for your patience and for staying engaged throughout this process.
This updated calendar reflects the feedback we heard from our community. It gives families more time to plan while still protecting important instructional time for students.
The Anchorage School District 2025-26 school year calendar has been adjusted to reflect make-up days due to weather closures. Please mark your calendars with the following updates:

What change was made to the 2026–27 school year calendar?
In response to parent and community feedback on the recently approved revisions to the school calendars, the Administration has determined the changes to the beginning of the 2026-27 school year did not provide sufficient notice to families and community stakeholders.
The new recommendation eliminates the impact on the beginning of the school year by adding the three (3) new instructional days to the last quarter, as outlined below:
- Revert back to the start dates on the 2026-27 school calendar approved September 2, 2025:
- Teachers’ first day: Friday, August 14, 2026
- Students’ first day (grades 1-6 & 9): Wednesday, August 19, 2026
- Students’ first day (grades 7-8 & 10-12): Thursday, August 20, 2026
- End of first quarter (student release grading day): Friday, October 16, 2026
- April 19, 2027, is a school day
- The last day of school for students is Friday, May 28, 2027
- Teachers’ last day is Tuesday, June 1, 2027

Why is ASD changing the 2026–27 school year start date for a second time?
After the School Board approved the 2026–27 calendar date changes in early April 2026, the District heard from many families, staff, and community partners. The feedback was clear: the change to the start of the school year did not provide enough notice.
The District understands that many families and partner organizations have already adjusted plans and schedules. The disruption this caused is taken seriously.
A revised recommendation was brought forward to address those concerns while still supporting student learning.
Why are additional instructional days being added?
The additional instructional days are part of the recently approved agreement with the Anchorage Education Association and reflect a shared commitment to expanding opportunities for student learning.
Time in the classroom is one of the most important drivers of student success, supporting improved learning, consistent progress, and better academic outcomes. Maintaining these days ensures we are meeting contractual requirements while continuing to prioritize strong academic outcomes for students.
Why were the days originally placed at the beginning of the school year?
The original recommendation placed the additional days at the beginning of the school year based on input from the calendar committee. This approach helped balance instructional time between the first and second semesters, supporting pacing and continuity of learning.
After hearing feedback from families about planning impacts, the District brought forward a revised recommendation that maintains the additional days while returning the start of school to August 19th.
