Elementary School

Children singing from sheet music.

All students in kindergarten to sixth grade attend Elementary Classroom Music, where they learn fundamental music concepts and apply this knowledge in many activities — listening, performing and creating.

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade receive one hour of instruction per week, usually presented in two 30-minute classes. Sixth-graders receive one 30-minute class per week. Most sixth-grade students also choose to receive additional music instruction by joining sixth grade band or orchestra.

Classroom Music teaches an appreciation of music of varying styles and cultures, singing a variety of folk and composed songs, playing instruments, dance, music reading skills, music terminology and concepts and more.

Extracurricular Opportunities

Many elementary schools have before or after school performing groups such as choir or recorder ensembles. Contact the classroom music teacher at a particular school for more information.

Festivals and Honor Groups

Elementary students have opportunities to participate in festivals and honor groups for band, orchestra, choir and more. More about Festivals »
