Alaska Delegation Urges Reconsideration of Non-Continuation of Federal Grant

Letter from Alaska Delegation

In his update during the September 16 Anchorage School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Jharrett Bryantt shared the U.S. Department of Education has cut funding for a grant that ASD uses to support programs helping students prepare for high-paying, in-demand jobs in Alaska.

The Notice of Non-Continuation of Grant Award is set to go into effect September 30, 2025. The Fostering Diverse Schools Demonstration Grants program will cut $3.3 million to ASD for this year. (ASD is currently in year three of this grant. Overall, ASD will lose $8.9 million by pulling funding for years 3-5.)

Why it Matters

  • ASD prides itself on high-quality career and technical programs. With 50+ CTE educators across ASD, the work being done across schools to offer career pathways and College, Career, and Life Readiness opportunities to students must and will continue.
  • This grant supports momentum at the school level to truly transform the Alaska economy.

Advocacy is Underway

“That is unprecedented, that is not normal,” Dr. Bryantt said of the cut. “But that doesn’t mean that ASD can’t protect the teachers in those classrooms.”

The Superintendent shared his intentions moving forward:

Advocacy is underway. Alaska’s U.S. Senators and Congress-person were immediately contacted. They understand the importance of the work in progress through this grant and have agreed to write a letter of support.
