Mobile Metal Detectors

Mobile metal detectors will be used at middle and high schools as part of a random screening process to help maintain safe learning environments. These screenings may occur without advance notice and are not targeted at specific individuals. In addition, detectors may be deployed at any school, including elementary schools, in response to a specific threat or concern reported to school staff or law enforcement. The use of metal detectors is one of several tools the district employs to deter weapons on campus and promote a culture of safety.

Students and visitors should carry only essential items when entering through a metal detector. Items such as Chromebooks, tablets, chargers, hard-sided glasses cases, and large binders must be removed from backpacks before screening. These will be visually inspected and passed around the detector. Keys, cell phones, earbuds (and their cases), and similar small personal electronics may remain on your person and do not need to be removed. Staff will provide clear instructions during the process to ensure it is efficient, respectful, and minimally disruptive to the school day.

Students, staff, and visitors who use mobility aids (such as wheelchairs, walkers, or crutches) or who have medical devices (like pacemakers or insulin pumps) will be accommodated during the screening process. Alternative screening methods—such as handheld wands or visual inspections—may be used as needed to ensure safety while respecting the individual’s needs. If you have specific concerns or require an exemption, please notify screening staff.

If you are an adult entering the building during an active screening, such as during school arrival or an event, you may be asked to pass through the metal detector or have your belongings checked. The process is typically brief and is designed to minimize disruption. All adults are expected to follow staff directions and cooperate with security personnel. If you are arriving for a scheduled meeting or student pickup, we recommend allowing a few extra minutes in case a screening is underway.

Yes. Mobile metal detectors may be used at large school events that draw families and community members, such as sporting events, dances, performances, and graduation ceremonies. Attendees should plan for extra time when arriving and be prepared for bag checks and walk-through screenings. The purpose of these measures is to help create a secure environment for everyone participating in or attending the event.

Screenings are conducted by trained security personnel. All metal detector equipment will be operated by Anchorage School District Office of Emergency Management (OEM) staff who are certified in the proper use of the devices. Private security professionals may be used to supplement OEM staff by assisting with secondary searches, monitoring the perimeter, and helping manage screening lines to keep the process moving smoothly. These individuals work under the direction of and in coordination with the district’s Office of Emergency Management. Their role is to facilitate safe and respectful screenings, provide assistance as needed, and help ensure compliance with school safety procedures. All personnel involved are expected to act professionally and treat students and visitors with courtesy.
