With the start of school, Mark has been instrumental in helping departments and schools learn how to navigate and use our new website. His support is helping ensure families can easily find the information and resources they need to help their students have a successful school year.

To recognize our Student Nutrition Area Supervisors with a heartfelt Chin’an for their outstanding achievement, dedication, and service.

The Area Supervisors’ hard work has been essential to expanding traditional meal service to every elementary school in the Anchorage School District. At the beginning of the new school year, the final seven schools Bowman, Willow Crest, Creekside, Gladys Wood, Denali Montessori, Muldoon, and Northwood will transition, completing this districtwide transformation.

Throughout the summer, the Area Supervisors carefully completed breakfast and lunch orders for every school and worked diligently to prepare for a smooth transition for students, families, and school café teams. Their leadership and attention to detail have helped transform not only how meals are served, but also the variety, quality, and choices available to students.

Because of their commitment and support, Student Nutrition has served more than 300,000 additional meals, expanded student meal options, and reduced food waste. This important work would not have been possible without them.

Spotlight on College Gate Staff at College Gate Elementary!

Subject: A Heartfelt Thank You to the College Gate Elementary Staff
As this year comes to a close and oh, what a year it was—I would like to take a moment to thank my staff at College Gate Elementary.

We started the school year normally, and things were going great. However, in early October, we heard about the victims of Typhoon Halong in Western Alaska. I immediately saw a need and knew that College Gate should step up to fill it. Evacuee students were brought to Anchorage and needed to be placed within the Anchorage School District. I volunteered our school, not knowing exactly what it would look like, but knowing deep down that my staff would understand and support the decision.

Soon after, we were welcoming student evacuees and helping them settle in after a trauma-filled fall. My staff did not hesitate to welcome nearly one hundred evacuees. Initially, our Yup’ik Immersion team accepted them into their classrooms, immediately making them feel safe and welcome. Even as class sizes grew, my staff never wavered.

Near the end of November, we were able to fund and fill four positions from various entities to support our new students. College Gate created four dedicated Western Alaska classrooms while keeping a primary class enrolled in our 2/3 Yup’ik Immersion Program. With the steady support of ASD Leadership and the relentless dedication of my staff, we made this major transition as seamless as possible.

Seven months later, my tired and ragged—but incredibly resilient—staff said goodbye to their classes and our Western Alaska evacuees. As I reflect on the massive endeavor we took on, I feel entirely reinvigorated in my educational career. Knowing that my staff and community stepped up to meet the needs of a group of people who truly had nowhere else to go sustains my inspiration to continue in this challenging and demanding profession.

Having dedicated nearly twenty years of service to College Gate Elementary, Mrs. Wooten has made a profound and lasting impact on our students, staff, and the broader community. Throughout her impressive tenure, she has served in numerous capacities, most recently stepping up to lead as our Activities Coordinator.

College Gate has a long-standing tradition of providing an outstanding and memorable learning experience. When our alumni return to visit, they consistently reflect on how transformative their time was as students here. When asked what makes College Gate so exceptional, they invariably point to our extraordinary community events.

Spotlight on Darren Kellerby at Highland Academy Charter School!

Mr. Kellerby is certainly one of the best ASD teachers. He has an incredible talent for brightening a room, showcasing his inner child, and giving students the support and education they need through his hands-on lessons. However, while everything I just mentioned is incredible, what is most incredible and sticks out to me is his ability to see and acknowledge all of his students potential and efforts. It meant a lot to me when he noticed how much effort I was putting into his class and told me to take a breath. Even on days when school felt exhausting, his energy and enthusiasm were something I always looked forward to, no matter the day. So thank you, Mr. Kellerby, for not only teaching science, but for making your classroom somewhere I always wanted to go, and for recognizing the efforts and potential every student you teach puts in and has.

Jeremy and his students made the Spirt of Tomorrow Awards so Amazing. He and his students interviewed all the award winners. The edited videos were played during the awards ceremony. It made the whole experience more personal.

Spotlight on Donna Young at O'Malley Elementary - 2nd Grade!

Mrs. Donna is new to our school this year, but from the moment we met her at the Back-to-School event, we knew she would be a special addition. Her enthusiasm and energy immediately stood out, and it’s clear she brings that same spirit into the classroom every day.

As a parent, I love watching Mrs. Donna’s interactions with the students at O’Malley. She makes a genuine effort to connect, often getting down on their level, modeling active listening, and showing sincere excitement about what they share. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and she has a gift for making learning feel fun and engaging.

She has quickly become a favorite not only of my son, but of many of his classmates. I’ve seen firsthand how students run to greet her at the drop-off line, eager for a hug, which speaks volumes about the safe, welcoming environment she creates. It’s truly heartwarming to witness.
We feel so fortunate to have Mrs. Donna as part of our school community.

Spotlight on Kim Bailey at O'Malley Elementary School!

Ms. Bailey gets kids excited about music and history. My kids, who love sleeping in every chance they get, voluntarily wake up an hour early to be in before-school chorus club. They also come home from school every week excited to share facts they've learned about the composer of the week and the historical context surrounding songs they've learned about. These lessons stick, too - we'll be listening to music at home weeks or months after the lesson was presented and they'll pipe in with facts about the composer or song that they recognize. Thank you, Ms. Bailey, for instilling a love of music in our children!

Ms. Freeman is a great teacher who helps students feel confident in their math skills and their ability to do hard things. She makes math fun and accessible. Spotlight on Joanna Hinks at Goldenview Middle School!

Mme Hinks has taken on a huge work load this year and has done so much for all her students. She is the teacher for the first ever middle school French immersion class in ASD. It takes a lot of extra effort and planning to kickstart a class like this. She has been extremely adaptable as the year has progressed, pivoting to always do what's best for her students. In addition to the new immersion class she continues teaching French elective classes for non-immersion students at Goldenview AND teaching students at South High who otherwise would not have been able to continue their French language education. Pretty much every time I talk to someone else about Mme Hinks they say something along the lines of "Oh, we love Mme Hinks!" Thank you, Mme Hinks, for all your hard work and your unending enthusiasm.

Spotlight on Brittany Cassidy at O'Malley Elementary!

"She makes math easier." ~Tessa. Thank you to Ms. Cassidy for helping Tessa gain confidence in her math skills. After the increased difficulty that 3rd grade math entails, Tessa put up mental blocks and convinced herself that math was too hard. But in 4th grade Ms. Cassidy has helped Tessa see that math can be fun and that Tessa is capable of excelling in the subject. This mentality shift has helped Tessa tremendously. With her support, we are building a strong community centered on kindness and respect through play. The 5th grade students serve as excellent role models, developing their leadership skills as they guide and support the younger students. Spotlight on JENNILYN INIL at COLLEGE GATE ES!

Ms. Inil is the English teacher for the Yup'ik immersion classes, and we are incredibly grateful for her dedication. She joined College Gate Elementary two years ago and has been a vital part of our school community ever since.

Spotlight on Jennifer Cowles at Rilke Schule German Immersion School!

Jenny Cowles's voice can be heard every day in the hallways of our school, coming from her open door where she teachers phonics and literacy skills to young learners. Her voice is cheerful, determined, and kind. I love hear Jenny's voice as she works with children, helping them to read. Every day when I was past her room, I catch a glimpse of her seated at a table, surrounded by young learners who listen to her parse words into syllables and repeat the sounds. Day by day, little by little, Jenny builds confidence and motivation in her students. She is reliably present, reliably warm, ready with a greeting and a smile for students and colleagues. I love coming to work because I know that I have colleagues like Jenny, who strive to help children with the very basics of learning to read. She always makes me smile, and I'm so glad she is my colleague. Kids know her as "Frau Cowles" and they know that she cares about them. I am so glad to know Jenny!

I have had three of my children go through Goldenview all with Principal Nogg as their principal. We have been so appreciative of his skill, knowledge and care for his staff and students. Julie Spath is the business manager for one of the largest divisions in the District Office, the home to nearly 90 employees. She does much more than support the management of budgets for ten separate departments within T&L, she places orders, sets up meetings, arranges for meeting set up and breakdown, manages phones, acting as the friendly face of the T&L team, and the list goes on... Beyond the day to day, Julie is consistently welcoming, positive and supportive of all the connected departments and guests at the Heart Shed. She is simply amazing. Just ask anyone who has worked with her and you will hear a first hand account of her professionalism and positive impact on those around her.

Spotlight on Alison McCarrey at Romig MS!

Alison has consistently provided an outstanding orchestra program at Romig MS. Every year, her advanced orchestra is somewhere between 90-100 students. That is far surpassing expectations and her group performs at the highest of levels at our MS orchestra large group festival! Outside of helping her own students, she also serves as the conductor of the Honor Orchestra, serving our beginning orchestra students all throughout the school district. She is a model music educator in ASD and throughout Alaska!

Spotlight on Terrell Paul at OEM!

Terrell Paul is an amazing parent and volunteer at Hanshew Middle School. He has supported our school with safety and emergency drill compliance, security issues when we had staff absences, and volunteered for dances and in the hallways as extra support. Terrell has a positive and infectious personality and knows several of the students at Hanshew through volleyball and softball/baseball coaching and other community events. I want to take a moment to recognize the incredible office and secretarial staff of Bettye Davis East High School. Spotlight on Joy Nunnery-Bates at Chugiak Elementary - Bus Route 611!

Joy is a spectacular bus driver who goes above and beyond to build a relationship with all of the riders in her care. She takes initiative to reinforce positive behaviors, incorporate songs for a JOY-filled ride, and exudes a warmth that makes riders feel safe and seen. Our bus drivers are the first and last point of contact for many students each school day. Students on bus route 611 in Chugiak are fortunate to be greeted with Ms. Joy’s beaming smile that says, “I’m SO glad to see you today!” Chin’an, Ms. Joy! Your work is important, and you are SO appreciated!

Coach Chandra is the most dedicated, responsible, kind-hearted and caring co-workers that I have had the honor of working with. She is 100% a team player and working with her in our School-based Behavior Supports (SBBS) team has been so helpful with my own transition from our Lake Hood SBBS site (which was dismantled last year) to Kasuun SBBS. She made members of my team and myself feel welcomed and has helped to maintain the structures in our classroom that helps our students to be reflective and successful. Chandra goes above and beyond every single day and is always thinking of others needs before her own. Her skill level with our students is exceptional and she is flexible to meet the needs of each of our students at all times. She has helped to ensure our MSD Room is being properly used and always steps in to help others. We are very fortunate to have such a strong and dedicated colleague in our SBBS program and Kasuun Elementary.

Spotlight on Houa Vang at Alpenglow (Sub BPO) and Williwaw!

Alpenglow Elementary has been without a BPO this year. Houa Vang has been working at Alpenglow until the position can be filled. He works at Williwaw at night and has been willing to take care of our school during the day.

BPO duties and night custodial duties differ. Houa is always willing to learn new things in order to complete tasks that are required. He will assist staff with anything that they need assistance with and he takes pride in his work. He has willingly jumped in and made our school shine. We are lucky to have him as part of our school community, even if it is only temporary. Thank you.

Spotlight on Rees Miller at King Tech!

Rees - Just wanted to drop a note saying today's lunch from King Tech's Culinary Art students was AMAZING! 

I was in the building for a meeting and noticed the staff in the lounge had really impressive lunches. They pointed me down the hall to the cafeteria area where I found the chicken dumpling soup and fruit tart. It was honestly better than any meal out I've had in a while.

The student customer service was also superb.
