    Dear Lake Otis Families,

It’s hard to believe the end of the first quarter is upon us. To say it’s gone by fast is an understatement! Old Man Winter is definitely clipping at our heels, and snow is making its way down the mountain. This is a great time to get ready for winter with appropriate gear for your child. Let us know if you need assistance with getting gear for your child.

The first quarter is all about learning routines, procedures, expectations, and setting the tone for the school year. Our upcoming conferences on October 23rd and the 24th will be a great time for teachers and families to talk about goals for new learning for the second quarter and beyond. Your child’s teacher will share different assessments, which will be used as a benchmark to show growth the remainder of the school year. Please ask your child’s teacher about his/her grades and how the grades were earned. Ask about the areas of challenge for your child and how you and your child’s teacher can work together to support improvement for your child. We encourage you to ask lots of questions. We believe our families are our greatest allies and partners in educating our students.

Attendance continues to be a focus for our school. We are using the motto Less than 8 is Great when talking about attendance with our students, staff, and families. Our goal is for our students to attend school 90% or more of the time. Absences add up! Did you know that missing only 2 days a month means a child has missed 10% of the school year? We aim for less than that. You miss a day you miss a lot. Our attendance rate for September was 86.46%, which was a great improvement from 78.42% in August. Wahoo!   Please let us know how we can support your family with regular, on-time attendance. We miss your child when s/he is not at school. J

We are looking forward to seeing you during our Parent/Teacher Conference week. If you haven’t signed up for your child’s conference yet using our Online Conference Scheduler on the ASD website, please do so as soon as possible. If you need assistance with scheduling your child’s conference, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher. We are happy to help.

It is a pleasure to be the principal of Lake Otis. This is an amazing place to be! Thank you for your support!

    Warmly,

    Lynn Mayberry-Burke, Principal
