Getting kids feeling open to share information about their day is foundational to having open communication with them when they are teens and young adults. Here are a few tricks that can help to get them to talk more openly about their day. Keep this magnet on your fridge as a reminder.

Quick tips to keep communication open

Ask open-ended questions:

Ask questions that require more than a one-word answer. 

Examples:

• “What made you smile today?”
• “What was the most interesting thing you learned today?”
• “If you had a magic wand what would you want to change today?”

 

Display interest:

Follow up by displaying interest

Examples:

• “Hmm”
• “Really?”
• “What happened next?”

This will encourage them to continue to give more details. It’s important that they feel you are interested   in what they are sharing. The more that parents listen, the more kids know what they share is valued.

 

Model sharing information:

It’s natural when someone shares information with you to want to share something in return.

• Share things about your day. Sharing things that were good and things that were more challenging, will model how to share things that may be uncomfortable as well as exciting.
• Another great way to model is by sharing things about your own childhood. For example: “When I was younger I loved playing on the swings at recess. What is your favorite thing to do at recess?”

 

Stay positive:  

If you feel something may not be going well at school, questions may come in a way that elicits a lot of emotion or the child shuts down and doesn't share.

Examples:

• Try “I know you got to sit with new kids today at lunch, How did that go?”
• Instead of “I hope you weren’t too sad at school today, I know your friends have been being mean.” When kids do not need to worry about what parents think or feel, they will often share more about their feelings.

 

Accept what they share:

As a parent, it’s important to accept what kids share.

Examples:

• “What is the best part of the day?” and they respond, “Recess”. Follow it up with “Really? What did you do?”

You may feel an urge to minimize by saying

• “Tell me about something important that you liked”.

That can leave a child feeling like there is a right/wrong answer to the question. Ideally, the goal is to keep the lines of communication open and set the foundation for life-long open communication.

 

Let the information trickle in:

It’s important to allow kids to share information at their own pace. They may need to process something before sharing it aloud. Sometimes they remember more details or things they want to share when they are not feeling pressured to provide an answer. When they want to share, you should be ready to listen. If you can’t listen, then you should make sure your kids know what they want to share is important and set up a time to be available. Example:

“Honey, I want to hear about what happened in math but I have to take this call from work. Can I come grab you in about 5 minutes when I’m done?”

Foundation for good communication

Young teens are beginning the process of pulling away from parents and seeking more independence. With this, parents begin to see young teens spending more time in their room alone, talking less about what’s going on in their lives outside of home, spending more time with friends and beginning to develop their own opinions. This becomes a critical time to start laying the foundation for good communication as they progress through their teen years. Quality and Quantity:

There is a saying that the quality of time is more important than the quantity of time spent.  The quality of time spent with young teens is very important to create strong and trusting relationships. An example:

• Doing an activity together you both enjoy

 It is foundational to get them to talk to you when faced with difficult situations. Quantity is also important, getting your teen to spend time outside their room even if it isn’t time engaged together. An Example:

• You are reading in the living room as they are watching their show on the TV.

Being in the same space helps to create that idea of comfort that young teens will later seek when faced with tough situations. The biggest piece is finding the balance between still respecting their need for space (time alone) and time with family.

 

Start early and model good communication:

To gain open communication when teens are older, it’s important to start early with listening and sharing information. Examples:

• Telling stories about when they were a teen
• Sharing things that happen during their day.

This will model for young teens how to share information and have good communication skills. To get young teens to share information regularly, parents need to make sure they are really listening to those things the young teen chooses to share.

 

Talk less, listen more without judgment:

Parents have many of their own experiences and values that lead them to know the way you would like to see your young teen handle a situation. When teens talk about their problems and parents jump into “rescuing” them or impart wisdom. It can shut down the conversation. It’s important to remember the learning that comes from teens getting to solve problems their own way. Asking questions or providing empathy like

• “What do you think you will do?”
• “That sounds tough.”

 It allows them to open up and share more. If they are unsure of what to do, offer a few suggestions (always more than one) so they can choose how to solve it.

 

Compromise:

One piece of good communication is modeling how to deal with conflict. Often, in middle school, parents begin laying the groundwork about how to disagree regarding rules and limits. Some common disagreements seen with young teens:

• Social media,
• Phone usage
• Bedtimes

Learning how to navigate these conversations will help you set the tone as your teen becomes older and conversations become tougher based around peer pressure with riskier behaviors. You may feel compromising will make you appear like a push over. In reality, when teens feel that their input and feelings are respected, they are more likely to follow the rules. It’s important for you to know what you are willing to negotiate on and what is non-negotiable.

 

Problem solve together:

When it becomes difficult, try to solve it together. Ask them to step away from the situation and think of a few different solutions. Then, as the parent, the model does the same. Sometimes, giving space to a conflict gives the opportunity to think more clearly. Set a time to come back together to discuss all the solutions. Through this process, both the teen and they might come up with the same solution or one they can both agree on.  

 

Focus on the positive:

Positive interaction will increase positive interaction. The more young teens feel good about the interactions they are having, the more they will seek out sharing information with their parents. So often, time spent with young teens is corrective or interrogative:

• “Did you do your homework?”
• “Did you clean your room?”
• “Who are you texting?”

Try to find things they are doing well. The more confident they feel in their choices, the more they will share; increasing open effective communication with parents.

 

 

It’s less about what we ask and more about what we know.

Getting teens to talk can be challenging. Often we are encouraged to ask open-ended questions. As kids move into their later teen years, it is less about what we ask and more about what we know. When kids talk we learn more. Here are a few tips to help get them talking more. Keep this card in your wallet for a reminder about getting your teen to talk.

 

Quick tips to keep communication open

React Little:

Teens often feel judged by many people in their circle (friends, teachers, bosses, parents). The less you react when teens are talking, the more open your teen will be to sharing information. Another way to look at it is it allows teens to have their emotions without worrying about how their parents feel.

 

Listen Actively:

Active listening is when we give our full attention without judgment or thinking about our reply. Saying things like “Hmm,” or “Really?” helps tell you are listening.  Eye contact, leaning in, positioning your body towards them are also some nonverbal ways to display active listening.

 

Give Space:

Parenting is hard and teens are faced with many difficult and risky situations. It will be challenging to actively listen and show little reaction. If feeling overwhelmed, it's OK to step away from the conversation to think about how to reply and support your teen while holding true to your family values and ensuring they are safe.

 

Don’t Rescue:

Parents have a parent alarm that goes off when knowing our kids are in tough situations. Sometimes it is referred to as the momma bear response. To ensure teens continue to share information, we can’t rescue or control what they do. Think of it as an opportunity to test out their skills in dealing with tough things. Possible responses are “that’s tough,  or what do you think you’ll do?” or “do you have a plan on how to handle it?” These give a lot of insight into their thinking, as well as convey that you believe in their ability to make good decisions.

 

Keep Perspective:

When talking with teens it’s easy to think of a problem bigger then it is. Getting a C will not prevent them from getting into college and neither will an F. Keep the problem small and easy to solve.  Teens are faced with a lot of pressure and decisions some potentially dangerous like driving with someone who was drinking. Those are the situations that we want their alarm bells going off on.

 

Avoid Over-Empathizing:

It’s easy to take on a teen’s pain as our own, but this can also prevent further sharing. Teen’s responses or feelings can change quickly and they do care what parents think even if they don’t show it. If we respond strongly in support and then they change their decision they could be too embarrassed to share about changing their mind.

 

Offer Constructive Feedback:

Teens can pick up criticisms easily and their fear of disappointing or being judged could further limit their willingness to share. Always ask before sharing suggestions “Would you like some ideas?” sets the teen up to be open to hearing a few ideas on how it could be handled. Always offer multiple suggestions that you as a parent are comfortable with and then give them space to solve if it is not dangerous or unsafe. In a dangerous or unsafe situation you many need to step in and help them to solve it if they are unable to come up with a safe solution.

2. Mostrar interés: - Muestre interés en lo que dicen

Acompañe la muestra de interés con respuestas como estas:

• «Umm»
• «¿De verdad?»
• «¿Qué pasó después?»

Esto les animará a seguir dando más detalles. Es importante que sientan que usted está escuchando y se interesa por lo que ellos están diciendo. Mientras más escuchen los padres, más sabrán los niños que lo que comparten es importante

 

3. Modele cómo intercambiar información:- Comparta información

Cuando alguien comparte información con usted, es natural que quiera compartir algo también.

• Comparta con ellos cómo ha sido su día. Al conversar de las cosas buenas y difíciles de su día le mostrará al niño cómo compartir con usted sus experiencias incomodas y también las emocionantes.
• Otra forma de hacerlo es contar detalles sobre su propia niñez, como por ejemplo diga: «De pequeño me encantaba jugar en los columpios durante el recreo». «¿Qué es lo que más te gusta hacer durante el recreo?»

 

4. Mantenga una actitud positiva:

Si percibe que algo no ha ido bien en la escuela, hacerle preguntas directas podría hacer aflorar muchas emociones o hacer que el niño no quiera hablar. Por ejemplo:

• Diga : «Sé que hoy te sentaste con chicos nuevos en el almuerzo, ¿cómo te fue?»
• En vez de: «Espero que no hayas estado todo el día triste en la escuela.» «Sé que tus amigos no han sido muy amables hoy.» (Si se dejan a un lado los propios sentimientos y suposiciones, los niños podrán descubrir sus sentimientos sobre lo que está ocurriendo).

 

5. Acepte lo que compartan:

Como padre, es importante aceptar lo que los niños compartan. Por ejemplo:

• «¿Cuál es la mejor parte del día?» y ellos responden: «El recreo.» Respóndale con un, «¿De verdad?» «¿Y qué fue lo que hiciste?»

Puede que sienta que están compartiendo algo insignificante y quiera decir algo como:

• "Cuéntame algo más importante que te haya gustado".

Sin embargo eso puede dejar al niño con la sensación de que hay una respuesta correcta o incorrecta para la pregunta. El objetivo es lograr que la comunicación se mantenga abierta y ayudar a que la familia se comunique entre sí.

 

6. Deje que la información fluya por sí misma: No los fuerce a compartir. Deje que lo hagan poco a poco

Es importante dejar que los niños compartan información cuando se sientan en confianza. Puede que necesiten tiempo para reflexionar antes de decirlo. Algunas veces ellos pueden recordar mejor los detalles o cosas cuando no se sienten presionados a contestar una pregunta. Cuando estén listos para compartir, debe estar preparado para escuchar. Si no es el momento oportuno para escucharlos, es muy importante que establezca un momento para hacerlo. Así les mostrará que lo que tienen que decir es importante para usted. Por ejemplo diga:

«Cariño deseo escuchar lo que pasó en matemáticas pero tengo que atender esta llamada del trabajo ¿puedo ir a buscarte en unos 5 minutos cuando termine?»

Durante la adolescencia los jóvenes comienzan el proceso de alejamiento de los padres y la búsqueda de una mayor independencia. A raíz de esto, los padres notarán que los adolescentes pasarán más tiempo solos en su habitación; que contarán menos lo que ocurre en sus vidas fuera de casa; que dedicarán más tiempo a sus amigos y que empezarán a desarrollar sus propias opiniones. La etapa de la adolescencia es un momento crítico para practicar una buena comunicación con ellos. Guarde esta tarjeta en su cartera para recordar estas ideas.

 

Consejos prácticos para mantener una buena comunicación

1. Calidad y cantidad:

La calidad del tiempo que se pasa con los jóvenes adolescentes es muy importante para crear una relación sólida y de confianza. Una relación estrecha ayuda a que hablen con usted cuando se enfrenten a situaciones difíciles. Por ejemplo:

• Participar en una actividad que los dos disfrutan

 La cantidad también es muy importante. Es necesario lograr que el adolescente pase tiempo fuera de su habitación aunque no sea haciendo algo juntos. Por ejemplo:

• Estar juntos en la misma sala mientras usted lee y ellos estén viendo un programa en la televisión.

Compartir el mismo espacio ayuda a crear esa idea de comodidad que los jóvenes adolescentes buscarán más adelante cuando se enfrenten a situaciones difíciles. El secreto está en encontrar el balance entre respetar su necesidad de espacio (tiempo a solas) y el tiempo que comparten con la familia.

 

2. Empiece temprano a enseñar lo que es una buena comunicación:

Para conseguir una comunicación mutua, es importante empezar temprano a escuchar y compartir información. Por ejemplo:

• Cuente historias de usted cuando era adolescente
• Comparta con ellos cómo le ha ido a usted en su día.

Esto mostrará a los jóvenes adolescentes cómo compartir información y cómo tener buenos hábitos de comunicación. Para lograr que los jóvenes compartan información con regularidad, los padres deben asegurarse de que realmente escuchan las cosas que los jóvenes deciden compartir.

4. Llegue a un acuerdo:

Una parte de la buena comunicación consiste en ensenar cómo se manejan los conflictos. Con frecuencia, en la etapa de la educación intermedia, los padres comienzan a sentar las bases de cómo discrepar en cuanto a las reglas y los límites. Algunos desacuerdos comunes que se observan con los jóvenes adolescentes son:

• Medios de comunicación social
• Uso del teléfono
• Hora de acostarse

Saber cómo llevar estas conversaciones le ayudará para cuando su adolescente crezca y las conversaciones sean más complicadas por la presión de sus amigos o de otros adolescentes. Quizá usted tema que el hecho de ceder le hará parecer que no tiene el control, pero en realidad, cuando un adolescente siente que su opinión y sus sentimientos son respetados, está más dispuesto a seguir las reglas. Es importante tener claro lo que usted está dispuesto a aceptar y lo que no.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

5. Resolver los problemas juntos:

Cuando alcanzar un acuerdo resulte difícil, deben intentar resolver el problema juntos. Pídale que se distancie de la situación y piense en otras soluciones. Entonces, como padre, muestre que también está haciendo lo mismo. A menudo, el hecho de separarse de un conflicto permite pensar con más claridad. Establezca un momento para volver a reunirse y discutir todas las posibles soluciones. Siguiendo estos pasos, tanto el adolescente como usted pueden llegar a la misma solución o encontrar una con la que ambos estén de acuerdo.

 

6. Concéntrese en lo positivo:

Cuantas más conversaciones positivas tenga, aumentarán el número de conversaciones positivas en el futuro. Cuanto más cómodos se sientan los adolescentes con las conversaciones que tengan, más querrán compartir la información con sus padres. Muchas veces, el tiempo que pasamos con los jóvenes adolescentes es para corregirlos o interrogarlos:

• "¿Has hecho tus tareas?"
• "¿Limpiaste tu habitación?"
• "¿A quién le envías mensajes de texto?"

Trate de encontrar las cosas que ellos hacen bien. Procure fijarse en las cosas positivas y buenas que hacen. Entre más seguros se sientan de sus decisiones, más compartirán; lo cual aumentará la comunicación franca y efectiva con los padres.

Lograr que los jóvenes hablen con sus padres puede ser todo un reto. A menudo es aconsejable que les hagamos preguntas abiertas. A medida que los jóvenes entran en la etapa final de la adolescencia, se trata menos de lo les que preguntamos y más acerca de lo que logremos saber. Cuando los jóvenes hablen es cuando más sabremos. He aquí algunos consejos para ayudar a que hablen abiertamente. Guarde esta tarjeta en su cartera para recordar estas ideas.

 

Consejos prácticos para mantener una buena comunicación

1. Reaccione con calma:

Los adolescentes a menudo se sienten juzgados por todo el mundo (los amigos, los profesores, los jefes, los padres). Mientras menos reaccione usted cuando los adolescentes hablan, mayor será la apertura de su hijo a la hora de compartir información. Esto permite a los adolescentes expresar sus emociones sin preocuparse de cómo se sienten sus padres.

2. Escuche atentamente:

La escucha activa significa prestar toda nuestra atención sin juzgar ni pensar en nuestra respuesta. El responder con un «Umm» o «¿En serio?» les demuestra que usted los está escuchando. El mirarlos a los ojos y tener la postura de su cuerpo inclinada hacia ellos, son también formas no verbales que le demostrarán que usted esta prestando atención.

3. Deles su espacio:

La crianza de los hijos no es una tarea fácil y los adolescentes se enfrentan a situaciones difíciles y muy arriesgadas. Escuchar atentamente sin reaccionar le será difícil. Cuando se sienta agobiado, está bien alejarse de la conversación para pensar en cómo responder y apoyar a su hijo adolescente manteniéndose fiel a sus valores familiares a la vez que lo protege.

4. No trate de rescatarlo:

Los padres tenemos una alarma que se dispara cuando sabemos que nuestros hijos están en situaciones difíciles. Para que los adolescentes sigan confiando en nosotros no podemos rescatarlos ni controlar lo que hacen. Véalo como una oportunidad para poner a prueba su capacidad de enfrentarse a cosas difíciles. Algunas de las respuestas que se pueden dar son: «esto es muy difícil, ¿qué crees que vas a hacer?» o «¿Ya tienes un plan para manejarlo?» Esto le dará importancia a lo que piensan y además le transmitirá que usted confía en su capacidad de tomar buenas decisiones.

5. Mantenga la perspectiva:

Cuando se habla con los adolescentes es fácil pensar que un problema es más grande de lo que es.  Sacar una C no les impedirá entrar en la universidad y tampoco una F. Estos son eventos estresantes y consecuencias lógicas que pueden aprovecharse como una oportunidad para reflexionar y mejorar. Procure que el problema parezca pequeño y fácil de resolver.  Los adolescentes se enfrentan también a muchas presiones y decisiones. Ciertas decisiones pueden ser peligrosas, como por ejemplo conducir con alguien que ha consumido alcohol. Esas son las situaciones para las que queremos que estén alerta.

6. Evite la empatía excesiva:

Puede ser fácil asumir el sufrimiento de un adolescente como propio, pero esto también puede obstaculizar que continúe hablando de sí mismo. Las reacciones o los sentimientos de los adolescentes pueden cambiar repentinamente y aunque no lo demuestren, sí les importa lo que piensen los padres. Cuando los apoyamos firmemente y ellos de pronto cambian su decisión, tal vez les dé vergüenza compartir ese cambio de idea.

7. Ofrezca opiniones constructivas:

Los adolescentes perciben las críticas fácilmente y su miedo a decepcionar o a ser juzgados puede limitar aún más su voluntad de comunicar. Siempre pregunte antes de hacer sus sugerencias. «¿Quieres que te de algunas ideas?» Esto prepara al adolescente a estar abierto para escuchar algunas ideas acerca de como manejar la situación. Ofrezca siempre varias sugerencias con las que usted, como padre, se sienta cómodo y luego deles espacio para que resuelvan el asunto ellos mismos si no es peligroso o arriesgado. En situaciones peligrosas o arriesgadas, es necesario intervenir y ayudarles a resolverlas si ellos no pueden encontrar una solución segura.
