District proposes increase in student activity fees

Recommendation is first student fee increase in three years

ASD administration is recommending an approximate 10 percent increase in middle and high school activity fees, beginning next school year. The Anchorage School Board will hear public testimony and vote on the recommendation at its April 21 meeting.

For middle school students, the activity and athletics fee would increase by $10 per sport. In high school, the fee would increase $20 per tier.

There is no proposed change to the family cap of $390.

During the public budget process, the district stated that there would be an increase in student activity fees to try to keep up with inflation and help recoup some costs of the activities. This is the first proposed student fee increase since the 2011-12 school year.

The district budgets approximately $5.1 million for middle and high school athletics. Approximately $1.1 million is collected by the district in student fees.

The school board will vote on the proposal at its April 21 meeting, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Public testimony is welcome.
