ASD students participate in German Camp

Nearly 60 Anchorage School District students took part in the 42nd annual Lager Nordlicht (Camp Northern Lights) at Birchwood Camp in Chugiak, Nov. 7-8.

The camp was started 42 years ago by the venerable Jo Sanders, longtime Bartlett German Teacher and now curriculum director of the Rilke Schule German Charter School.

Nine ASD German teachers helped run the camp: Camp Director Will Kimball of West High, Fauna Reynvaan of Service, Elizabeth Dick of South, Kelly Hughes of Bartlett, Kristi Senden of Chugiak, Charles Beattie formerly of the Rilke Schule and now Dimond, Lucia Woofter of Northern Lights ABC and Hanshew Middle School, Barbara Dubois of Benny Benson, who has started up a German Program for the first time at that school and Jen Doerry of Eagle River.

The theme of this year's camp surrounded the German victory in the 2014 World Soccer Championships in Brazil.

Friday evening's singing and dancing festivities featured a special guest appearance by Lucie Woofter's husband Bob Woofter, esquire and their son, Hunter Woofter, a German major at U.A.A.

Campers arrived to a dinner featuring one of the finer German Apple Cakes on the planet and sang and danced the night away in German.

Campers spent the night in the heated cabins of the camp and then participated in six academic mini-classes during the day which covered a range of subject areas that included art, PE, history, German and home economics, all taught in German. Students also viewed the feature film "Das Wunder von Bern" in the original German with English subtitles.

Students' language levels ranged from first year through fourth year and Advanced Placement.

The final event was a presentation of skits and song to the whole group by the campers from the various cabins in which they stayed overnight.

Next year's camp will be held Friday and Saturday, November 6-7, 2015 at Camp Birchwood and is open to ASD students of German.
