Graduation exam law changes

Certificate of Achievement graduates may request diploma

Change in state law allows district to present diplomas

Approximately 1,000 Anchorage School District graduates who earned a certificate of achievement between spring 2004 and spring 2014 will now be offered high school diplomas. The opportunity is open to former students who met all graduation requirements but did not pass at least one portion of the High School Graduation Qualifying Exam (HSGQE), also known as the exit exam.

HB278, signed by the governor, repealed the HSGQE and directed all Alaska school districts to issue retroactive diplomas to former students who earned certificates of achievement.

Qualified former students were mailed a notification letter and request form on July 29. Former students who have changed addresses since leaving high school and who believe they are eligible, should complete and return the diploma request form  to ASD.
