May 11, 2017
This month, ASD and the community are celebrating 3,180 students who earned their high school diplomas. Nearly 300 of them will receive the District’s Seal of Biliteracy signifying they have attained proficiency in two or more languages.
This year, the District also celebrates 17 students in the Russian Immersion program. They are the first ASD class – and the first in the nation - to start a Russian immersion program in kindergarten and graduate 13 years later.
“I’m confident all of this year’s graduates are prepared for what comes next,” said Dr. Deena Bishop, Superintendent. “The job market is rapidly changing and I’m excited to think about how we’re organizing education to prepare students for the 21st century.”
Dr. Bishop encourages the community to congratulate ASD’s Class of 2017 and all those who helped them along the way.
The public is welcome to attend or watch graduation ceremonies live from the Sullivan Arena via ASD’s live-stream at www.asdk12.org or on GCI cable channel 1 and channel 907 in high definition. The live-stream available on the District’s website is compatible with most mobile devices. The live-broadcasts are available only for ceremonies held at the Sullivan Arena.
For a complete list of all graduation and completion ceremonies, visit www.asdk12.org/calendar/graduation. Patrons of the ceremonies are not allowed to bring balloons due to allergy concerns.
Through the 90%x2020 collaborative partnership, the community is encouraged to display signs in their homes, business and on social media that celebrate the Class of 2017. Information on the grad blitz campaign is available online. Window posters will be included in this Sunday’s edition of Alaska Dispatch News.
