The following news release is shared on behalf of PAIDEIA Cooperative School, a new charter school approved by ASD.

On December 15, 2014, the Anchorage School District School board unanimously approved the charter for the new PAIDEIA Cooperative School.

PAIDEIA’s acronym stands for Passionately, Accommodating, Individual, Desires, Enhancing, Independent, Achievement. PAIDEIA will strive to meet the needs of athletes, musicians, dancers, artists and all students looking for their passion. PAIDEIA will be open to all students in grades K-12.

The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development has received and is reviewing PAIDEIA’s charter application. An appropriate facility has been located for the school and the lease is pending approval.

PAIDEIA must meet the minimum enrollment of 75 students in the March lottery in order to open its doors in August of 2015. Parents may enter their child into the March lottery until March 19.

Sandra McMahon, school spokesperson, said the idea for PAIDEIA came about as a result of discussion with parents, teachers, community members and business members expressing interest in a cooperative network of students and educators. This network would link students with opportunities while providing the community with passion driven achievers who have flexible schedules.
