Anchorage Students to Celebrate Strength of our Youth Day September 26, 2013

The Strength of our Youth campaign is a student led, districtwide effort that recognizes and celebrates the fact that a significant majority of Anchorage's high school students are engaging in healthy behaviors and making positive choices.

At 8:45 a.m. on Thursday, more than 2,000 East High School students will gather for their homecoming pep rally. They also will celebrate the positive, healthy choices that the majority of them are making in our community. Each East High sports team will highlight an important statistic that demonstrates how strong our youth are. For example:

  • 89% of Anchorage high school students are cigarette-free;
  • 83% have abstained from soda pop in the last week; and
  • 86% have been physically active in the last week.

This will be a dynamic, positive, photogenic, youth-driven event.

The Strength of Our Youth debunks myths around drugs and alcohol, recognizing that most youth in Anchorage are making healthy choices and living healthy lifestyles. At each of ASD's comprehensive high schools, students will receive a youth-created, strength-based, positive social norms brochure featuring Youth Risk Behavior (YRBS) data to relay the positive behaviors among teens in Anchorage.
