November 19, 2025: Message from the Superintendent: Rightsizing Update

Dear ASD community,

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Rightsizing ASD process. I know how difficult these conversations have been. The possibility of school closures is deeply personal for our families and staff. I want to thank our community for showing up, speaking up, and engaging with care throughout this process.

Earlier this fall, following direction from the Anchorage School Board, the district presented a Rightsizing ASD proposal. The plan included closing two elementary schools and repurposing those buildings for ASD charter schools, adjusting select school boundaries, and opening available space in some schools for community childcare providers.

After reviewing the proposal and hearing extensive community feedback, the Board voted last night not to close any schools at this time.

The Board approved two other components of the plan. First, boundary adjustments between Romig Middle School and West High School will help ease overcrowding and allow more students to attend schools closer to home. District teams will communicate next steps, timelines, and any impacts on transportation and enrollment so families know exactly what to expect.

Second, the childcare portion of the plan will allow us to begin transforming unused school space into childcare opportunities for Anchorage families. It is abundantly clear that something must be done about the childcare crisis in our community. ASD is stepping in to help. We will use excess capacity to make a real difference. This is an out of the box idea that reflects ASD’s commitment to being part of the solution.

This effort will not only help families but also support our workforce. When parents and school staff have access to affordable and reliable childcare near their workplace, they are better able to stay and thrive in their careers. This is one more way we are working to address the educator retention challenges faced by school districts across Alaska.

Now that these items have been approved, we are moving quickly into next steps. Our initial childcare focus includes three to four buildings in different parts of the community, and our goal is to have this program up and running in time for next school year.

This is a real, practical path forward. We are proud to take these important steps in service of our families, our students, and our community.

Sincerely,

Jharrett Bryantt, Ed.D.
Superintendent, Anchorage School District
