West and South High School tennis teams are co-state champions.

West and South high school tennis teams are co-state champions. This is a historic tie!

  • “West and South are the only Alaska schools to win the ASAA State Tennis Championships since the event started in 2007, so in many ways it is appropriate that they shared the title this year” said West coach Bill Cotton.
  • West has now won State 8 times and South 6 times.
  • Gabriel Portal, an exchange student from Brazil, was a stand-out singles player this year for South playing two spectacular matches at the State championships to defeat both the #1 and #2 seeds from West to win the State singles title.
  • West finished both last year and this year undefeated in regular season matches, was the winner at the Region IV tournament this year, and first at State.
  • South was the runner-up (to West) at the Conference and Regional tournament, but advanced 10 players to State, which was the most from any Cook Inlet Conference team, and placed first at State.
  • In 2018, the West head coach was voted Coach of the Year and the South head coach was voted Coach of the Year in 2019.
  • Both schools have a no-cut policy and focus on teaching a sport that can be played for a lifetime.
  • Congratulations South and West on your championship wins and historic tie for first place. You make ASD great!
