The South High Lady Wolverines are the 2019 Flag Football Champions
This is South’s first flag football championship in the school’s history and is also the first time in Alaska history to have championships in both Boys and Girls Football from the same school.
South finished with a record of 16-2 on the season, including a victory over the Fairbanks conference champions, Lathrop, and defeated West High 21-12 in the championship game.
The Wolverine’s starting quarterback, Shelby Ottum, suffered a season ending injury in the second to last game of the season. The team came together as a family and rallied support behind freshman quarterback, Olivia Heartwell, to win the next five games including three playoff games in one week.
South had five First Team All-Conference players, five Second Team All-Conference players, and three Honorable Mentions this season.
The team has had fantastic support from parent volunteers and administrators; Activities Principal Chris Ruggles and School Principal Dr. Luke Almon- who attended almost every JV and Varisty game this season and supported the ladies every day at school.
Congratulations on your successful season and championship victory. You make ASD great!
