The Fort Worth Fire Department is promoting this year’s National Fire Prevention Week focusing on fire safety in the kitchen. The annual campaign, sponsored by the Nation Fire Protection Association, is a way for the department to reach out to residents through social media and community events and educate them on fire safety.
The leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries is cooking. On average, 44% of home fires start in the kitchen. By sharing safety tips and spotlighting specific kitchen hazards each day, the Fire Department hopes to educate all Fort Worth residents on the importance of taking simple actions that can keep themselves and those around them safe.
Establishing a kid-free zone in the kitchen, always having a lid or pan nearby to smother flames, staying alert while cooking by setting a timer and never leaving food attended are just some examples of the kitchen safety tips spotlighted this week.
