Michelle Carton, ASD Elementary K-6 Librarian, was chosen by Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA) as Librarian Media Specialist of the Year. According to TCEA, “This award honors a librarian or media specialist who improves their library using technology. He or she collaborates with administrators, teachers, and students to support technology integration.”

Carton was selected as a finalist in January along with two other librarians/media specialists from other school districts in the nation. In February, Carton traveled to Texas for the 2020 TCEA Convention and Exhibition, where she was announced as the winner of the prestigious title and $1,000 in prize money.

Collaboratively, Carton orchestrates connective and global digital citizenship projects with Texas teachers, while providing professional development to teachers all over Texas, both virtually and physically through TCEA, South by Southwest Education (SXSW EDU), Skype in the Classroom, and Zoom. As Texas leads the charge for technology innovation in education, partnering collaboratively develops digital and global citizenship here in Alaska, as well as inviting and engaging teachers from across the world. This award is for the recognition of the work done with students, teachers, and librarians in Texas, as well as Alaska, and abroad.
