Eagle Academy Charter School Has Been Recognized As a National Blue Ribbon School for 2020
Eagle Academy Charter School has been recognized as a national Blue Ribbon School for 2020. This stellar recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student.
The coveted National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content.
“We are extremely excited about being selected as a 2020 National Blue Ribbon School for Exemplary High Performance,” said principal Deanne Carroll. “Eagle Academy is an incredible community that strives for excellence and it's an honor to be recognized.”
The U.S. Department of Education recognizes all schools in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, student subgroup scores and graduation rates — Exemplary High Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests, and Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s student groups and all students.
DEED Commissioner Dr. Michael Johnson said it is an honor to recognize this outstanding Alaskan school. “Congratulations to the teachers, families, students, and school communities of Eagle Academy. This award is a testament to your commitment to student learning.”

Eagle Academy uses Direct Teaching Instruction, which is a method where the teacher leads the students in a carefully constructed step-by-step lesson. Teachers set clear lesson goals and make sure students have frequent opportunities to practice the new skill.
The teachers, and support staff are fully committed to the mission and passionate about implementing with fidelity the evidence-based Spalding and Saxon instructional curriculum as well as using data in decision making and lesson planning.
Eagle Academy's daily class schedule has been specifically designed to allow students to level up or down in English/Language Arts and Math. This allows students to receive instruction in their zone of proximal development rather than by age or grade level.
This, combined with the school community's expectations of rigor and the commitment of parents to work with their student(s) outside of the school day, has resulted in Eagle Academy consistently being the highest-ranking elementary school in the State of Alaska.
Which for student Emma Grace Saylor is important. "I'm so proud that Eagle Academy has earned this exciting award. Everyone at school works hard to give us a strong academic foundation,” said Saylor. “They are also great at having personal connections with each of us, which I think helps us learn better. I am so happy to be a part of this school."
