ASD Educators Recognized as Finalists for Presidential Awards for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching

Congratulations to five Alaskan secondary educators nominated and selected as state finalists for the 2021 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). Out of the five finalists, three represent the Anchorage School District.

The award recognizes those educators who have both deep content knowledge of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science, and have the ability to motivate and engage students to achieve success in those areas.

As representatives of Alaska, these educators move to the next stage — a review by a national committee who choose one science and one math educator as national PAEMST recipients. Not only would they receive the highest national recognition bestowed by the United States government, awardees also earn $10,000 from the National Science Foundation and a trip to Washington D.C. for the award presentation and reception.

"A lot of nominees don't complete the process after they are nominated, so just to be a finalist is hard work. It's definitely not an easy process, and it's an incredible achievement to make it to this level as a finalist representing Alaska," said PAEMST Alaska State Coordinator Joey Jigliotti.

If you'd like to nominate an amazing K-6 STEM educator for 2022, the PAEMST K-6 cycle nomination window is open until Jan. 7, 2022. The award alternates each year between teachers of grades K-6 and grades 7-12.

The 2021 PAEMST Alaska finalists are below. Congratulations to all these educators and those representing our District!
