Maya Angelou (Born April 4, 1928), was an American author, actress, screenwriting, dancer, poet, and civil rights activist best known for her 1969 autobiography, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, the story that illustrates how strength of character and a love for literature can help overcome racism and trauma. The autobiography made literary history as the first nonfiction bestseller by an African America woman.
