Parent News 8/16/22
Dear Dimond Families:
Welcome Back to School! The first days of school can be exciting, fun, and a little stressful for students. On Thursday and throughout the first days, the staff will provide assistance to ease the stress of acclimating to the return of school. Staff will be throughout the building helping students find their classes and lockers. Please take some time to read and familiarize yourself with this week’s parent blast info.
Also, on Friday freshmen will participate in the Freshman Ignition Day. This full-day freshman orientation is run by the Freshman Mentorship program and Student Government. Lunch will be provided to freshmen and in the afternoon, our Back-to-School assembly will be held from 1:20 pm to 2:00 pm. All students are expected to attend and will be guided to the gym.
Professional Learning Communities are held every Monday. To allow staff time to design instruction, collaborate and participate in professional development, there will be a modified schedule on Mondays. PLCs will meet from 7:15 am-8:00 am and classes begin at 8:15 am. During PLCs the academic wings will be closed to students. The auditoria and commons will be open to students.

- There are two zones for drop-off: Zone 1 is at the rear of building, and Zone 2 is between the main building and the old gym/pool building T
- The front roundabout will be closed during drop-off and pick-up (6:30am-7:45am, and 1:30pm-2:15pm) to reduce congestion on 88th Avenue
- Staff will be posted at key points on the route to ensure the steady flow of traffic, and there will be signage to help guide families through the process
- Student drivers may park in the large student parking lot which can be accessed off Arlene; Students will be issued a fine for parking in the staff parking lot
- Students arriving after 7:45am need to use the main entrance because all other doors will be locked at that time (8:30am on PLC Mondays)
**Monday late start will follow the same process, but the front roundabout will remain closed until 8:30am
Dimond is part of Cohort 3, which is scheduled to have bus transportation October 3rd - 20th.
LOCKERS
You can find your student’s locker number in Q Parent Connect, under enrollment. Students will receive the combination to their locker when they get their schedule in their first period class on the first day of school. Lockers are labeled according to the hall where they are located (A-D) and begin with a "1" if they are on the first floor, and a "2" if they are on the second floor (for example: A2059 is in the A wing on the second floor). Staff are ready to support all students in finding their lockers and classes, and freshmen will have extra support on Friday, including a tour of the building, as they participate in Freshman Ignition Day.
FREE & REDUCED LUNCH/CAFETERIA
If you need to apply for free and reduced lunch, please visit the ASD Student Nutrition page (www.asdk12.org/domain/1246). There is an information packet available in the main office. Free lunch is no longer provided to all students.
Meals will be available in the morning and at lunch. We wanted to let you know that we are short-staffed in the auditeria. Due to the limited staff, getting lunch will be delayed. Our food service workers will work as quickly as they can and are asking that students be patient in getting their meals.

ADDRESS VERIFICATION/ONLINE REGISTRATION
Some students still have not completed the registration process. Although your student may be able to see a schedule, please make sure to complete the registration process by going online.

These are the forms parents/guardians sign each school year to keep the school updated.
Begin accessing your student’s information by clicking on their "picture" and then ASD Quick Links on the left. Look for the Online Registration link.
- Be sure to check all information for accuracy i.e. addresses, phone numbers, names etc.
- Primary Contacts should not be listed as Emergency Contacts. Emergency Contacts are in addition to the Primary Contacts.
- Employer is a required field. Please correct as needed.

CURRICULUM CORNER–IMPORTANT SCHEDULE INFO
We’re looking forward to seeing all our students on Thursday, August 18th, and we have a few reminders about the first week from a curriculum perspective.
When students arrive on Thursday, they can find their period one class posted in several convenient locations near the front doors. They will then head to their first-period classroom where they will receive a brand-new, goldenrod-colored schedule that will likely resemble the one they’ve identified online. The schedule they receive during 1st hour on Thursday is the final version, and they should depend upon it.
Students should not go to the counseling office for schedule changes during the first 5 days of school. They should attend their courses and submit the Schedule Change Request (SCR) form if they would like counselors to consider a change.
If your student decides that he/she would like to request a schedule change, they will need to submit a form. Schedule Change Request (SCR) forms can be picked up from the curriculum office. Please ask your student to fill out a form and submit it to the box near their counselor’s office. The counselors will do their best to accommodate these schedule change requests.
NEW COURSE OFFERING:
For the 22-23 school year, Dimond High School is offering an exciting new course: Advanced Placement (AP) Human Geography. During this course students will study the interaction of mankind with its geography. It seeks to better understand the interplay between societies and their environment and how one impacts the other. In short, the course looks to be tremendously engaging and is available for all grade levels.
Additionally, the course will fulfill the social studies elective requirement for graduation. Should your student find room for a new elective in his/her schedule, please contact your counselor at Dimond High via email, but please do so soon, for we will run out of seats in this elective course.
BACKPACK POLICY AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES:
In preparation for school supplies, please read the following information. The first day of school is right around the corner and families want to know, "What materials does my student need for the first day?" The general supplies that all students will need for that first day are:
- Spiral notebook or binder with notebook paper (student choice whether it's one per subject or one for all subjects)
- Pencil or pen
- Chromebook and charging cord
Teachers will provide any additional content-specific supply lists during the first few days of school. If you are new to the ASD and need to check out a Chromebook, please contact our front office at (907)742-7000.
**A note about backpacks and book bags: Students are allowed to bring backpacks to school, but they are expected to be stored in their lockers from arrival at school until final dismissal. Backpacks are not permitted in classrooms. Students may use small, simple bags with minimal compartments to carry necessary classroom supplies (as listed above). Acceptable bags include string backpacks, small messenger bags, small tote bags, small purses, fanny packs, or small kettle bags (loaded from the top). Generally, bags that are 12" X 16" or smaller are acceptable. Our goal is to provide a way for students to carry their necessary school supplies while minimizing congestion and hazards in the hallways and classrooms. Bags that are questionable in regard to this policy may need approval from the Student Services office. Students who do not comply with the book bag policy may be subject to having their bag confiscated, searched, parent notification/pickup, and/or disciplinary consequences.
PARKING PERMITS
This is an important notice for all student drivers. This fall we are suspending the fee for parking permits. However, students planning on driving to school will still need to go through the process of Requesting a Parking Permit. All parking permit requests require proof of insurance, a valid driver's license, and BOTH student and parent/guardian signatures. If you have already purchased a parking permit, we are currently processing refunds. Student drivers must adhere to the rules and regulations of driving on campus and parking in the student parking lot.
