Parent News 8/23/22
Dear Dimond Families:
We are off to a great start of the school year. Although we are experiencing the challenges of not having busing, parents have been incredibly supportive and understanding about this unprecedented situation. We appreciate your patience in adjusting to the new system for drop-off and pick up. Thank you!
Remember safety is our highest priority. Please continue to adhere to the procedures that have been put in place. We can all work together to ensure that our students safely come to and from school.
As noted earlier, bus transportation will begin October 3rd - 20th. During this time, regular drop off and pick up areas will be open.
GAS CARDS:
If you are a parent of a student that usually rides a bus, please come to the Activities office to collect a free gas card. Only parents may sign for the gas card.
DHS BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT:
Dimond High School cordially invites you and your family to Back To School Night on Thursday, September 1st. Families will join us in the auditeria at 5:30 PM. After some brief introductory remarks, families will use their student's schedule to travel around the building, meeting teachers and learning about their class expectations and goals. The night will conclude at 7:30 PM.
Please note that Back-To-School Night is meant to be an informal opportunity to meet with teachers and staff. Families will need your student’s schedule for where to go throughout the building. Your student’s schedule can be accessed through ParentConnection. Unlike Parent-Teacher Conferences, teachers and staff will speak generally about their classroom expectations and programs, and they will enjoy meeting anyone that can make it to this great event, but individualized conferences would need to be scheduled for another time.
We look forward to seeing you on September 1st at 5:30 PM.
UPCOMING MAPS TESTING:
Starting on Monday, August 29th, many students at Dimond High School will take part in MAP testing during their Language Arts class. The MAP test is a formative assessment that creates a real-time snapshot of student achievement for teachers and administrators, providing a means of adjusting course work to better meet the needs of your students.
To this end, please ensure that your student brings his/her Chromebook to school fully charged. Students that have not borrowed a District Chromebook will be provided one by their teachers. The test will likely take a few hours, after which classes will return to their regularly scheduled curriculum.
Thanks to all of our families for supporting this meaningful assessment as we work to better serve all of our students.
SENATE YOUTH PROGRAM APPLICATION:
The Department of Education & Early Development is soliciting applications for the U.S. Senate Youth Program—a national program sponsored by the Federal Senate and underwritten by the Hearst Foundation. It is open to juniors and seniors who hold elected positions in student government during 2022-2023 academic year. Students must be enrolled in a public or private school. State delegates will have outstanding leadership qualities and a strong commitment to public service. They generally rank in the one percent of their states academically.
Each delegate receives a $10,000 undergraduate scholarship and will participate in the USSYP Washington Week in Washington, D.C., March 4-11, 2023, where two Alaska students will join 102 other delegates for an intensive educational program about the workings of the Senate and the federal government overall.
Applications are due by 4 p.m. November 1, 2022. The application packet is attached to this email.
Only one scholar per school may be nominated. Incomplete applications will not be considered. See https://education.alaska.gov/recognitionprograms. The Alaska contact is Dr. Bjorn Wolter at 907-465-6542 and bjorn.wolter@alaska.gov
BACKPACK POLICY:
**A note about backpacks and book bags: Students are allowed to bring backpacks to school, but they are expected to be stored in their lockers from arrival at school until final dismissal. Backpacks are not permitted in classrooms. Students may use small, simple bags with minimal compartments to carry necessary classroom supplies (as listed above). Acceptable bags include string backpacks, small messenger bags, small tote bags, small purses, fanny packs, or small kettle bags (loaded from the top). Students who do not comply with the book bag policy may be subject to having their bag confiscated, searched, parent notification/pickup, and/or disciplinary consequences.
PARKING PERMITS:
This is an important notice for all student drivers. This fall we are suspending the fee for parking permits. However, students planning on driving to school will still need to go through the process of Requesting a Parking Permit. All parking permit requests require proof of insurance, a valid driver's license, and BOTH student and parent/guardian signatures. If you have already purchased a parking permit, we are currently processing refunds. Student drivers must adhere to the rules and regulations of driving on campus and parking in the student parking lot.
