King Tech Students and Parents:

 1. Safety continues to be paramount at King Tech High School, and with recent threats of violence around the district, I want to assure you that we remain vigilant in taking all possible measures to keep students and staff safe. We have monthly safety and evacuation drills; teachers and administrators frequently discuss safety with large and small groups of students, emphasizing that ensuring safety is a collective responsibility; we never send students back to their home school if a situation there might put them in danger; and we practice the best safety measure of all – demonstrating genuine regard for every individual in our school. A few students have expressed that they are anxious of late because of the threats at other schools. If your child falls into this category, please encourage them to find me or any of our support staff. We’ll take whatever time is needed for these important discussions.

2. With just a few outliers, nearly all current full and part-time KTHS students now have their second semester schedules. Most students have rolled over their CTE Pathway course for a second or third semester, while some have chosen to pursue a different course of study. Again, on and off ramps are available for students as they further match their interest and aptitude. Whatever path King Tech students take, they will be prepared for a variety of post-secondary education, training, and workforce option.

3. One class not yet scheduled is the optional “Power Hour” that runs from 1:30 to 2:30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The menu of second semester offerings will be published on December 3, and students will be able to sign up later that week. The courses run from 3 to 15 weeks long. Students who complete all 15 weeks in any combination of 1 to 5 courses, will receive a .5 elective credit. ASD transportation is not provided at the end of Power Hour, but we assist students with public transportation or with finding other solutions so they can access the excellent courses and trainings.

4. Faculty sponsor Teena Calkin has launched a PTSO chapter and is asking for parent volunteers to sit on the board. She has scheduled a meeting for Tuesday, December 11th at 6PM in Room 219. Please consider joining the KTHS PTSO.

5. Lastly, all of us at King Tech hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends.

That’s all for now. Don’t hesitate to contact any of us with questions, 742-8900.
