- Updates from King Tech
Update for August 2019
Greetings students and families,
I hope you enjoyed what seemed to be an endless summer of great weather. We are looking forward to another great year of many success stories. Last year, King Tech graduated our first class of 104 King Tech High seniors. What an exciting accomplishment for students, families, and our staff! And, we are excited to welcome back the class of 2020 and the new class of 2021. As you are aware, King Tech prides itself in delivering an education that is unique, engaging, and post-secondary focused.
There are several items worth celebrating:
- King Tech was accredited by the internationally recognized accreditation agency - AdvancEd. The review determined that we provide a high quality education with a score well above the national average.
- Our Veterinary Assisting Program received the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) accreditation. Our veterinary assisting program is the only NAVTA approved high school program in Alaska and one of only a few high school programs in the U.S.
- Our Career and Tech School Organizations (SkillsUSA, HOSA, Educators Rising) competed in the state and national competitions and earned a number of national top place finishers.
- Our full-time academic program added a social studies teacher (Creed Campbell) to help with increasing face-to-face delivery of core academics.
- Many students participated in our internship program and several students were offered apprenticeships and/or signed on with a business for direct entry into their chosen trades.
- We formed the KTHS Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTO). Please see information below regarding how to join and support your school.
Our staff prides itself in developing positive relationships with students. Teachers, counselors, support staff, and administrators are all committed to helping students develop a career pathway plan. King Tech is a unique educational environment with small class sizes and a work-like atmosphere that is substantially different from a traditional schooling experience. To add to our uniqueness, our full-time student academic program is moving in a new direction. Please review the fulltime student academic program new direction document, below.
Once again, welcome to King Tech! We are ready to help you with your career pathway journey. Whatever your future plans, let us help you connect to your dream. You have the opportunity to be part of a unique school that has the power to transform the way you think about education and most importantly who you will become as a successful career professional.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kern McGinley, Principal

Full-time Student Academic Program "New Direction"
We believe a high quality education is built on a strong curriculum, positive student-teacher relationships, and engaging delivery of instruction. Thus, we are taking a new direction with our academic delivery model. There will be less online learning and more face-to-face instruction. The team delivering our academic model consists of Ms. Bukowski - Math, Mrs. Valantas - Language Arts, Mr. Campbell - Social Studies and Mr. Spade - Science.
Schedule Example. The model will vary depending on what block of the day your student has their Career and Technical Education (CTE) class scheduled. In addition, a student's academic schedule will depend on what subjects they need to satisfy grade level graduation requirements.
For example, if your student is taking Digital Electronics (CTE) in the morning, then they would follow the academic core 4, 5, and 6 schedule. Likewise, if your student is taking Culinary (CTE) in the afternoon, then they would follow the academic core 1, 2, and 3 schedule.

Professional Presentation Skills. We are excited to announce our professional presentation skills development program. In order to get students ready for the demands of college or direct entry careers, we are incorporating professionalism into our academic delivery model through an individualized real-world project-based learning program. The project was inspired by the nationally recognized 20time Project from the creative minds at Google.
The nuts and bolts of the 20time Project:
- The Project will span the entire school
- On Fridays, students will spend time working on a 20time Project in their academic class time
- The project is required and will makeup 25% of a student's final grade in each of their academic areas
- Students will pursue a creative interest and will learn to make small progress to a larger goal
- The project will consist of the following elements: research, a proposal, data-gathering, weekly blogging, and a final digital rich presentation
Professionalism. At King Tech, our mission is to prepare all students for post-secondary education and the workforce. We believe that promoting professionalism is a vital component of our mission. Therefore, our students are expected to be on time and attend class regularly, dress appropriately, no hats, remain free of electronic device distractions, and exhibit a positive attitude. We strongly emphasize these components of professionalism. Please see the ASD Attendance Policy, pages I-11- I-13, and note that 15 absences may result in an automatic withdraw from KTHS. FULL TIME STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND KING TECH MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY, FROM 8AM TO 1:20PM.
