ASD Fine Arts Department Project Seeks Healthcare Worker Selfies to Honor Their Efforts During the COVID-19 Pandemic

After hearing stories of long hours, sacrifice, and great risk, Eagle River High School art teacher Jacob Bera wanted to find a way he and his students could express their thanks to healthcare workers battling on the frontline against COVID-19.

Inspired by the work of artist Steve Derrick, Bera is leading a venture called "Portraits of Those Who Serve: Honoring our Healthcare Workers Project." Students in his classroom and other K-12 art students from the Anchorage School District will be illustrating the portraits of local nurses, doctors and health care workers wearing their PPE.

These portraits will be drawings, paintings and digital works no larger than 9 inches by 12 inches in size. The portraits will be created by K-12 artists of all abilities, with the goal of making them as realistic as possible. Once they are complete, the portraits will be displayed in an online exhibition and eventually safely distributed to the worksites of the featured healthcare professionals.

Bera invites local nurses, doctors, and healthcare workers who have been part of the effort to protect Anchorage from the COVID-19 pandemic to submit a photo of themselves by Jan. 17, 2021.

How to submit your photo:

  1. Take a "selfie" wearing your PPE. Focus on your head, with as little as possible in the background.
  2. Click on the following link to fill out some basic information and upload your photo:

You have until Sunday, January 17th to submit information and picture. After that, the ASD Fine Arts Department will be distributing your submission to each student artist. Student artists will be working on portraits throughout the month of February. An online exhibition of the artworks will take place in March and April. ASD will safely deliver portraits to your worksite by May.
