Service High School Assistant Principal Imtiaz Azzam has been recognized as the Region IV Assistant Principal of the Year by the Alaska Association of Secondary School Principals (AASSP) for her outstanding work at Service. Azzam has been with the Anchorage School District for 21 years and six years at Service, but has served across the District at Dimond High School, Kind Tech High School and Wendler Middle School – where she ran the Newcomers Program.
“I feel honored and very appreciated. I work diligently to ensure that students have equitable access to various education pathways at Service and succeed at the highest level,” said Azzam.
Azzam was described as a force to behold and who deeply cares about her students success. “She uses data to drive her decision making and works tirelessly to ensure students are provided the absolute best education possible. As the curriculum principal she is constantly seeking new opportunities for students to explore their passion and possibilities for their future. She is a one of a kind educator whom students and staff love and adore,” said one colleague.
AASSP sponsors regional and statewide Principal of The Year recognition awards to honor the educational leaders who play such a pivotal role in student success. They may be nominated by anyone – students, staff, parents, District office staff or principal peers – with awards finalized by AASSP members in their region. Regional Principals of The Year are eligible to be in the running for the statewide Alaska Principal of The Year.

The AASSP Board of Directors will meet and select the 2022 Alaska Assistant Principal of the Year. The state's winner will then be asked to submit an online application to NASSP for the national award and 2022 National Assistant Principal of the Year.
