Principal’s Report to the Academic Policy Committee

1/14/19  

 

Dear APC members,

 

Second semester has started well!

 

Enrollment:  141 students, 90 boys and 51 girls.

Lottery: Currently 22 applicants, 11 male and 11 female:

6th:  16 Target:  60

7th:   5 Target:  15

8th:  1 Target:  15

 

Staffing:  Hired Stephanie Gabel from long term sub to Social Studies Teacher. Emily Smith on maternity leave; long term sub is Emily Beeson.

 

Upcoming events:

    • Jurassic Parlement Wednesday 4:30

 

  • Monday 1/21 No School
  • NAEP test 1/31
  • Feb Student Led Conferences cancelled; regular school days 2/19-22/19
  • School Climate Survey coming up

 

 

Facilities:  Met with Cook Inlet Tribal Council to discuss possible partnership involving our future facility/campus and their “Fab Lab” program. We are invited to a visioning meeting with them next week on Thursday, January 24th in Girdwood to continue exploring partnerships.

 

Assessment:  Upcoming includes SCCS next week, NAEP 1/31, PEAKS in spring.

 

Budget and Finance:  Adjustment with special needs factors $193,896



    1. Committee Update (Facilities) - see notes from Principal report, Caroline is still working on CIHA working agreement (hoping for a new facility for fall of 2020
    2. Project/ TREK  and Staff Update from staff liason (Mr. B. not present) Kluever mentioned 8th grade wind tunnel and iditarod trail sled projects. 7th graders working on building bird houses to hang up for birds.

    1. STrEaM Sports Approval
      1. Sylvia made a motion that STrEaM board approve the establishment of a cross country running and cross country skiing team for the 2019-2020 school year.
      2. Whitney seconded the motion
      3. Discussion included funding for equipment and implications for other sports.
      4. Vote called.  Unanimously approved.

    2. Recruitment discussions will be on January agenda
      1. Currently have applications for the lottery
      2. Adam will talk to Megan about her report about recruitment
      3. Lottery closes at March 21st at 5pm, so if Megan needs help with recruitment Adam will have her communicate her needs with the APC
    3. Work Session Agenda
      1. “Let’s get the BAND back together”, Philippe (Caroline start band class)
      2. Women in STEM Girl Scout program Feb 2nd
      3. Plan the Juneau trip for legislative visit/charter renewal
    4. Legislative Session Concerns
      1. Caroline Storm brought to our attention the upcoming legislative concerns. Great Alaska Schools is a good resource for staying connected with current needs. https://www.greatalaskaschools.com/
      2. Alaska education funding is the center of the community - be involved in your local political representation.
