High School Participation

• Health exam forms require a doctor's signature. Health exams are good for 18 months and must be current throughout the season of the sport. ‌

Once all forms have been completed, please visit your school’s activities office to submit or verify online payment and complete your final GPA eligibility check.

Changes to Activities beginning 2026-2027:

• Elimination of some programs 
  • Gymnastics (Outsourced)
  • ESports
  • The Dome
  • Junior Varsity (JV) Teams – Hockey
  • C Level Teams – Flag Football, Football, Basketball, Volleyball (1 C Team Limit)
• Reduction of some programs
  • Practice Time Restrictions 
    • Swim/Dive (pool) 
    • Hockey (indoor ice)

No changes to Admission Charges: 

All events will be charged at all levels except at JV levels when not proceeding a varsity contest; and where control of the gate is impossible. 

Transportation changes

To reduce the need for buses, some teams will use parent- and coach-driven carpool caravans instead of district transportation. 

Families will complete a newly revised Transportation waiver through Arbiter. Carpools will operate within established Anchorage boundaries (Rabbit Creek exit to Muldoon exit), with students not riding alone with an adult and no additional stops between the school and event location. 

In Eagle River and Chugiak, similar carpool arrangements may be used within the ERHS/CHS area.

Middle School Activity Fees

ASD has instituted activity fees for Middle School activities. Waivers are available for ASD students. Please contact your school’s front office for additional information.

The following guidelines apply to this fee: 

• Those activities that “pay to play” include all ASAA competitive programs except for Honors, Music, Solo ensemble and World Language Declamation.
• All fees are to be collected as part of the eligibility process at the beginning of the season for each sport. 
  • Any student that is not selected for the team will have the fee returned to them. 
  • The final team determination will be made and announced to students within the first five days of the season. 
  • No student is allowed to try out for the team without paying the fee or obtaining an approved activity fee waiver. 
• Fees are collected according to standard district accounting procedures, since the funds are to be deposited into the general fund account rather than the school account. 
  • Any student who is still participating after the date for the first contest in which that student could have competed is NOT eligible for a refund. 
  • Refunds must be requested from the activities' office within five school days of that date.
  • Students transferring within the district during a season are given credit at the receiving school for the pay to play fee.
• A family requesting an activity fee waiver should contact their student's school Activity Office.
• There is an individual student cap of $800 (three activities) per school year. There is no fee for participation in subsequent activities once a student reaches the individual student cap.

Students must meet the eligibility standards of the Anchorage School District and the Alaska School Activities Association to participate in activities. More information about eligibility, conditions of participation and letter award criteria can be found in High School Activities Handbook section 3.

A physical evaluation by a medical professional (ANP, PA, or MD) is required for participation in ASD sports.  Health exams are now good for 18 months and must be current through the full season of the sport.

The tobacco, alcohol, and controlled substances policy of the ASAA requires students and parents to watch a video and sign an acknowledgement form.
 

Homeschool students in grades 9-12 can apply to participate in athletics at a public school. The eligibility of these students must be verified prior to the first day of practice of the sports' season. It is the parent and student responsibility to submit a current transcript and schedule to the ASD school to verify eligibility.
