Substituting for the Anchorage School District

  • Certificated Substitutes

    Certificated substitutes are substituting for teachers and nurses. A certificated substitute must have either a bachelor's degree or a current Alaska teaching certificate. Long-term substitutes must have a current Alaska teaching certificate before beginning the long-term assignment. It is the expectation of the Anchorage School District that a substitute will work a minimum of one day a month.‌

     

    How to Apply

    If you are interested in applying for a certificated substitute teaching position, please start by filling out an online application. Once your application is complete, stop by the Human Resources front desk at the Education Center, 5530 E Northern Lights Blvd, to request a substitute teacher hire packet. Complete and return all of the pages in the packet to the HR front desk. Once you are authorized to work as a substitute teacher, you will be offered training opportunities in classroom management. Be sure and look for the training flyer in your hire paperwork.

    Pay Schedule for Certificated Substitutes

    Less than 20 consecutive days in the same position

    $150 per day

    Long-term substitute*

    $255 per day


    *Eligibility for long term substitute teaching requires a current Alaska teaching certificate before starting in the assignment.


     

    Classified Substitutes

    Classified substitute positions are substituting for teacher assistants, special education teacher assistants, clerical staff, and safety and security‌ staff. A classified substitute must have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED. It is the expectation of the Anchorage School District that the substitute will work a minimum of one day a month. 

     

    How to Apply

    If you are interested in applying for a classified substitute position, please start by filling out an online application. Once your application is complete, stop by the Human Resources front desk at the Education Center, 5530 E Northern Lights Blvd, to request a classified substitute hire packet. Complete and return the pages in the packet to the HR front desk. 


    Other Classified Substitute Positions

    ASD also has substitute positions for bus drivers and attendants and Student Nutrition assistants. These positions also require a minimum of a high school diploma or GED. If you are interested in applying as a substitute bus driver or bus attendant, you may apply online.

    If you are interested in applying as a substitute Student Nutrition assistant, you will apply using our paper application, or if you are already an employee you may use the paper transfer application. You may print the application or ask for one at the HR front desk. Once you have filled out the application, return it and request a substitute Student Nutrition hire packet. Complete all the items in the packet and return them to the HR front desk.

    Clerical

    $14.00 per hour

    Teacher Assistant

    $14.00 per hour

    Special Education Teacher Assistant

    $14.00 per hour (may require lifting, diapering and feeding)

    Safety Security   

    $18.24 per hour

    Bus driver   

    $19.60 per hour

    Bus attendant   

    $10.55 per hour

    Student Nutrition   

    $11.50 per hour


    Special Notes for Certificated and Classified Substitutes

    • Student teachers – Please submit official transcripts or clear copies of your official transcripts indicating your bachelor's degree to the Human Resources Department. You may upload your transcripts to your online application.
    • PE, art and music – These substitute jobs may be itinerant. This means you will travel to multiple sites during the course of the day. Please read/listen carefully to the special instructions for jobs of this type. If you cannot or are not willing to travel, please do not take the job, or cancel the job more than one hour before start time.
    • Canceling a job – If you must cancel a job right before the start of the job, please call both Substitute Dispatch and the school and let them know you are canceling.
    • Illness – If you know you are not feeling well, please do not accept a job. This creates a problem for the school if you need to leave halfway through the job.
    • Military base access passes – Security rules for access to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson are in effect.
