From the Principal
November 3, 2021
Dear Trailside Families;
November is the time to think about all the things we can give thanks for. A few things that immediately come into my mind are my family, my husband and two children, my Trailside community, the amazing Trailside staff, the beautiful setting I get to work in each day, and the community in which I am able to work with each and every day.
I am so impressed with the students at Trailside. They are working so hard to learn and maintain their knowledge throughout this school year. Our staff is diligently working with our students on reading and math and utilizing the WIN groups to help students catch up with specific skills or to help push students further in their knowledge. Throughout the day, staff work to infuse the science skills and the social studies skills into the reading and math curriculum. To help with this, the district has made the following statement regarding schools focus of resources; In an effort to best support our elementary students, many of whom continue to struggle academically as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools are working to focus their resources in a manner that best supports the instructional priorities of English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. You may see staff that has elected to only report grades in the subjects of ELA and Math. If this is the case, you will see a written note in the comments section explaining why a grade may not be present.
The district is offering to families if you are interested and choose to have your child vaccinated, some clinics in the evenings and weekends at the district office. If you are interested, click this link to find more information.
A friendly reminder that bus 403 is not running November 1-19. If you ride that bus and need assistance getting your child to school, please contact the front office and ask for Karen. She will be happy to help you.
There is no school for students on November 11th. Teachers will be having training all day while students are home. Thanksgiving break begins on November 25th and students don’t return to school until Monday, November 29th. I hope you are able to take time with your family on the 25th and 26th and then through the weekend.
I wish you all a fantastic November. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to me. I am here to help and assist in any way. You can call the front office at 907-742-5500 or send me an email at jones_heather@asdk12.org
Sincerely,
Heather Jones, Principal

Call for volunteers for the Food DriveCall for HelpNow more than ever, families are experiencing food insecurity and are struggling to make ends meet. Prior to the pandemic, Trailside Student Council has hosted wildly successful Food Drives once a year (and sometimes even twice) to help Anchorage families in need.Many businesses and organizations are struggling with staffing and the Food Bank of Alaska is not exempt. This year the Food Bank of Alaska has stated, "To be the best possible stewards of our staff resources, we are not able to deliver or pick up barrels. Our barrels are 32 gallons and usually hold about 100 pounds of food." With that in mind, We are seeking a few parents who have the ability to pick up the empty barrels from the Food Bank Wednesday, November 24th, and also load the full barrels into a truck or some type of cargo van to return to the Food Bank on Wednesday, December 15th. Our ability to run a Food Drive this year is contingent upon getting volunteers to transport barrels. If you are able to assist us with pick up, drop off, or both, please contact Kelly Bolling 2nd Grade Teacher and Student Council Advisor bolling_kelly@asdk12.orgThank you for your consideration. -

Battle of the Books
Trailside's Battle of the Books for the 2020-2021 school year held its first meeting last week. It was thrilling once again to see the library full of excited kids to join a team of readers. It is not too late for your child to join. 5th and 6th graders are meeting on Tuesdays in the library during recess. This year there are 3 awesome coaches (Mrs. Reich, our ignite teacher, Mrs. Rand, former Trailside librarian currently a state librarian, and myself). Also, we are reigning state champions. Let's do this TIMBERWOLVES!
5th and 6th 2022 school battle permission slip.
For those of you who are new to Battle of the Books, here’s a little background information… *The Battle of the Books is a statewide Alaskan reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the AK Association of School Librarians. The goals of the program are to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension, and promote academic excellence. A list of 12 books is selected in the spring of each year. The students read the books and work together with their team to memorize the titles and authors and to quiz each other
Alsaka State Battle of the Books: state websiteThanks for supporting the library and your reader!Mrs. KellerTrailside LibrarianHello,I am excited to announce that battle practices will begin next week. 5/6 are Tuesdays and 3/4 are Fridays (unless an in-service) in the library. Practices will continue through the 2nd quarter. We will hold the school battle the week of January 10th. Permission slips will start going out today and will be required by the second practice for kids to participate.
