From the PrincipalDear Trailside Families;March is here and with that comes spring break and longer days. I, for one, look forward to spring break and enjoy the longer days so I can get outside and walk my dogs in the evenings, instead of in the morning. Once spring break is over, the fourth quarter seems to go by very quickly. Spring break is from the 7th of March through the 11th. Students do not have school on the 4th of March due to teachers finishing report cards that day. So no school March 4-13, see you on the 14th!Please take the time to share what we are doing great and ways in which we can improve by completing the parent climate and connectedness survey. You can copy and paste or click the link to access the survey: https://surveys.panoramaed.com/aasb/asdfamily. As a part of this process, we will also be getting feedback from students. Our 3-6 grade students will complete this survey in the classroom with their teachers. The information provided helps to set goals for the following year and determines needs within the school. It is also great to share the positive comments that come from the surveys too.February 28th, we moved to optional masking within the school setting. Anyone that comes to the school can choose to mask or not. Staff will not be required to mask within the school setting either. Please note, it would not be feasible for teachers to monitor student masking within the classroom, so please talk with your students if you wish to have them mask within the school. It will be the responsibility of the students to uphold your requests within the school setting. The optional masking will also pertain to before and after school activities that are run by ASD staff. Bus riders, due to federal mandates, will still be required to mask when on a bus. If your child tests positive for COVID, they are required to stay home for the 5 days, and then they need to mask at school for days 6-10 per new ASD requirements. When we return from spring break, we will begin preparing for our statewide testing to take place during the testing window of March 28 - April 29, 2022. The new state assessment is called the Alaska System of Academic Readiness (AK STAR). The content areas that will be testing are English Language Arts and Mathematics. The tests will be for students in grades 3-9 with 5th graders also taking a Science test. If you are interested in looking at support resources for families by grade level you can click the link below and choose the grade level and it will show you a tutorial and some practice tests. Mural for the Apple Orchard
In January, local artist Cheryl Chesnut from Spreading Tree Studios worked with a small group of Trailside artists to create a mural that will be proudly displayed in our Apple Orchard in the spring. Thank you to Spreading Tree Studio and our amazing Trailside PTA for providing this opportunity for our students. The mural will be proudly displayed in the foyer until it is ready to move to the orchard. Check the mural out the next time you visit our school. See how many hidden objects you can find in the mural.Thank you to the 5th and 6th-grade artists (standing - left to right) Adina, Adele. Cheryl and (sitting - left to right) Adelynn, Kleian, Morgan, and Niobe. Not pictured: Logan, Adigan, Maggie, and AnnDid you know that there are 63 apple trees planted in our orchard? Also, the gravity irrigation system installed in 2020 makes the process of watering the orchard much easier. It used to take 2 1/2 to 3 hours to water the orchard. With the help of the irrigation system, it takes around 15 to 20 minutes. -
